i have just purchased my first ae,
a GTV levin sprinter running a 20valve with quad throttles.
the previous owner had the car registered with a EFI 16valve 4A-GE up in QLD. Now that the car has a 20v and is down in melbourne. Do i need an engineers or vass certificate or not because i know that when an engine is replaced, (if its the same engine) then a certificate isn't needed.
any info will be much appreciated.
cheers

yes you do. the authorities to not consider a 20v 4age to be the same engine as a 16v.

If the 20v had been engineered in QLD, would you still need to get a new certificate for Melbourne?

im going up to QLD, if i just get it engineered there will the certificate count for VIC?
and how long does it take for a mechanic to analyze whether it is "engineered".
also, does anyone know any mechanics that i can take it to seeing as its only 80 bux, save some coin and use it on some watanabes
cheers

I'm going to say yes, you'd need a new cert. Other state's road worthy certificates (or wahtever they are called in other states) don't apply in Vic. I'd assume the eng cert is the same.

You'll definately need one for the 20v. I noticed a while ago there was somebody on here i think selling a 16v 4age equipped ae86 and included in the sale spiel that no eng cert was required due to some reasons (i can't remember what they were). Anyway, whatever those reasons, that car needed a cert too.

Any engine that is not standard in that vehicle in Australia requires a cert in Victoria.

Short answer: I agree with af ^^^^ just there.

Slightly longer answer: Talk with an engineer in Vic and VicRoads and see what they have to say.

There is a big difference between what you can get away with, and what is legit if you crash it and need insurance cover or get pulled over by a cop who really wants to find something wrong with your car.
