Re-Shimming For New Cams

Righto, so I currently have my cams out, as I am replacing valve stem seals. I am running a smallport, so I thought, why not throw some bigport cams in, provided I can find some cheaply/freely/locally. But my concern lies with valve clearence, and wether this will have to be adjusted with new camshafts. My clearences with the standard cams were peachy, so will I face issues with just throwing the bigport cams in?

Everytime you repace cams or valves, you need to recheck valve clearances. If you are lucky, you can get it all back to spec just swapping a few shims around without needing any new ones.

You need a feeler gauge to measure all gaps. You need a vernier caliper or micrometer to measure all shims.

It works out much easier doing it in inches rather than metric.

Forunately, 4A-GE shims are the same used on 7M-GE and 3S-FE and others. So a Toyota mechanic should have a selection.

Adjusting shims is incredibly easy. A $10 set of feelers, a set of verniers and a trip to Pick a part to swipe shims and you are set.

I found it no hassle doing it in mm though Johnny, esp since my shims seemed to go in 0.05mm increments.

Cool beans, I think I'll pick up some feelers and verniers, and try and swap some around to get it right, if not hit up some wreckers. Only issue is, living in Newcastle, and all its glory, we are devoid of any Pick A Part type wreckers, that I know of anyway.
How difficult is it to remove the shims? The manual suggests a small screwdriver and a magnet of some type, is there anything that works quite well for this job? Any tips or tricks?
