Hi all,
Not sure where to post this, but since I dont know the problem is, decided not to put in the technical section.
In the last week ive noticed a sound coming from my car when driving. I have to be doing over 15km/h to hear it.
Its like a metalic chink sound.. like a ball bearing dropping into a tin can. About 1.5 -2 times a second.
When I have the window up, it sounds like its coming from passengers side rear inside the boot.
But today I was drviing it in the car park, giving it a bit ... breaking the 5kmh speed limit so I could hear it.. doing about 15km/h it..
I had the window down and the echo in the car park made it lounder and alot clearer. Its definately coming from the outside rather than within the boot...
Still passengers side, but cant tell if its front or rear..
I know its hard to tell but anyone had the same problem or ideas of what it could be?

Check your universal joints (TAILSHAFT) first then check your brakes, if you have drums check inside in fact check out all of your rear end but it sounds like unis. Does the car wobble at all?, check wheel nuts etc. Cheers, Mick

Thanks for the tips, I tried to have a quick look at lunch today.. Got my mate to drive while i listened and it SOUNDS like its coming from the passengers front quarter.
And the noise can be more accuarely described as a soft rattle rather than a clink. Like a piece of thin piece of metal tapping from the flow of air.

Is it speed dependent? does it get quicker as the car goes faster? Does it change frequency when you are in different gears? What about engine load? is it louder or quieter when you accelerate?
Or it could be something totally different. I had something similar once and it turned out to be a spanner that I'd left hanging off a nut somewhere on the suspension, it drove me nuts for a couple of days until I looked under the car :P

i know this may sound bit wierd but is quite common especially on holdens.
check that you haven't got a wheel wieght come loose. even a little loose can become really noisy and sounds sort of like what you decribe.

Hahhah spanner on the nut!! :P
Okay ive worked out where its coming from. Its the front passengers side. When I push the front of the car down on the passengers side i hear a distint ping. One each time I push down and once again as the suspension comes back up.
I guess Ive been hearing this as i drive as the suspension oscilates. But I still dont know what the click is. Havent had the time to take off the wheel to look.
Anyone know what this could be?

Front strut thread, mine occasionally becomes undone after being absolutely thrashed...
Jack the car up, look at the strut. You'll see an octagonal-shaped part attached to the strut with thread exposed beneath it. Grab a large shifter or adjustable wrench and tighten the puppy up. Noises and handling problems will disappear :)
Let us know how you get on mate :)
