You have probably already seen this.

Search around the various sites. I am sure I saw something somewhere fairly recently re a bearing kit, plus synchros in a different set. I think it was on Toymods.

I hadn't seen that actually, it's a pity the pictures don't work, but it is still a helpful article.

I've done a bit of a search around the place, but it hasn't proved to be all that helpful. The main thing that needs replacing is a couple of bearings i think, i can just lap the synchros in again, and that should improve things a bit more.

if you can find the link to that bearing kit it would be awesome.

I hunted around but can't find the thread I saw (which I am sure was on Toymods) but did locate this which was the link the thread discussed

<a href="http://www.drivetrain.com/transilltoyta_t50.html" target="_blank">http://www.drivetrain.com/transilltoyta_t50.html (http://www.drivetrain.com/transilltoyta_t50.html)</a>

Part number K100509 looks to be the one ? but you would clearly need to check this closely with them.

Note they are in the US.

Interesting to see even aftermarket prices are hugely expensive and also note the synchro's are priced separately.

I have not had any dealings with them.

Also assassin10000 says his rebuild cost him $800 in parts, and that's USD.

Found a rebuild kit, but the supplier needs to know if the box is a T-50L or a T-50M

i've not heard of either... can anyone shed any light on that?

At first i was like  ,

But now i'm like :D , i had an idea.

Possible difference between your T50 L and M's: There were 2 versions put out, one to suit T motors, one to suit A motors. The input / output shafts are different, not sure about ratios etc. So that'd be the difference, but fuck knows which is which. Check trans number on build plate? Anything stamped on the box itself?

Already thought of that, but the 20 spline gearbox is a T50E so there goes that theory,

the build plates just have T50 on them, and there is nothing on the inside or the outside of the box either, so i'm completely stumped atm.

I have had a look thru all my Jap manuals and can't find any reference to L's or M's.

Has anyone got the really detailed factory T50 manual?

I shall wander down to Motor Book Shop (just around the corner) later and see if they have it.

One's probably the updated version that came in the 87 cars.

No T50 manual in stock unfortunately, should have bought it when I saw it.

Only vaguely interesting reference was one I saw in an older genuine Celica/Carina manual.

Nothing relevant in the T40 / T50 stuff. But it also had a W40 4 speed box which in brackets after W40 had RA20L.

So at least the T50L and T50M may actually mean something.

But doesn't help.....

How much was the kit though? I am very interested for mine as well but given the cost of the one the bloke in the US bought it would nearly be cheaper to do a W5* conversion.

Cheers

A relevant thread to put some perspective on the cost. This is from a UK ae86 forum and the guy offering the service is a Toyota mechanic apparently

I haven't got a final price, but it should be fairly cheap for me, as i don't need any new synchros, just some new bearings and seals, which is what comes in the kit.

I do however need a new output shaft, as the splines on the gearbox i bought were substantially twisted. If people are interested i can supply them with kits once i have sorted out my gearbox.
The supplier of the kits is looking into what box mine is, as i gave them all the relevant bearing numbers, so hopefully they can sort it out for me.

According to them the difference is in the output shaft bearing, even though there is a separate listing for the 20 spline gearbox, so i am have no idea what the 2 could be.
