Hey all,
Just driving the rain today and some P plater from a complete stop turned in my land and knocks the rigth back side of my car. It isnt too bad just a bit of rubbage and a couple of dents on the rear quarter but I am fine with that. I drived off slowly and the P plater drove off in tangents with me. Does anyone know how long I can take before making a report or should I make one right away. Just I have exams and preparation to do, timing is off the essence. I have his licience plate etc. Just wanted to know if anyone had any insight into it. I am sorta half hearted about this, as it has previously happened to me with no success when reporting to cops except the other party got a fine but I didnt get an insurance claim.
Thanks all

last time i heard its illegal to leave the scene of an accident without stopping...

goto the police station and explain the situation , ASAP

I don't understand why you wouldn't have stopped, would have only taken 5 minutes to swap details. You'll be hard pressed getting a favourable result from the cops as it would be your word against his.

But if there was maybe paint from each others car on both their cars?

No I think you guys mistaken me. I slowed to a complete stop because we were heading to the end of a street and the end turns to the right or left. I was on the left lane and he attempted to turn into my lane and hit me. I came to a stop and then he turned back into the right lane and turned. This happened right at the end of the street so therefore I was unable to chase him. I have his licience plate to. ATH 250 Silver Rav4 toyota. Although my car looks clean now it looks like a pig

hate to say it but youd have to push a rav pretty hard to do a runner from me.

he did good in not chasing him. cause even if he was able to chase him, what was he gonna do next? perform a pit maneuver and arrest the guy? what he couldve actually done was get into more trouble for reckless driving and speeding. so yea, chasing hit-and-runners is a no-no. as for the insight:

take pictures of the damage, and pace where the accident happened. take that and the cars lic. plate # to the police and report the accident.

Well I personally believe that chaing the person would have done little if anything beneficial. I wouldn't judge that on my inability to beat a rav 4 I personally dont think thats relevant in this case.

I think I will let it sit. No point in wasting time to the police and him getting a fine. Was planing to respray the car over the christmas break

have a read of this i found this a while ago

http://www.lawsociety.com.au/page.asp?partid=6655

its leaning more towards personal injury but still good info

i if were you i would go down to the police station and explain what happen
you never know he might be there now and he's gonna leave you up shit creek

your an idiot

go report it, get his insurance claim (proberly not worth it due to excess) and just hit him up for $400, then that goes towards ur paint etc...

The only reason that i wouldn't go to the police etc... would be if you were in the wrong

Your throwing money away

running away from an accident is a crime

tell the cops, he WILL get snapped good

this happened to a mate of mine recently, just got the license plate, reported it

got his car fixed by the other guy, and the other guy not a nice fine!

go to the police right now.....ok now..NOW

NOW!!!!!

felix how is he an idiot? all he has is his number plate and a mental image of the car. Sure you could go to the police but they wont straight give you the bloke's details. more to the point they have little concern in chasing up little prangs which it seems was the case. so your suggestion to "just hit him up for $400" i think is a little far-fetched. You win some you lose some. I'm sure a decent portion of people here have bumped into another car and pissed off from the scene. its unfortunate but thats the way it goes sometimes. hope theres a decent outcome in it for u ko ko

Went to the police just for completeness reasons. Reported it and licient plate stolen. Makes sense why he didnt stop. Doesnt bother me though. And 400 dollars isnt much to be honest. Anyways ill plan for a respary in the near future :)

i suspected that the car would be stolen or the driver drunk or something... most people would pull over..

seems like it was unlucky...

if i was in ur shoes i would of given chase...

quite hard getting money out of people in those scenarios anyway

lol adam

I can't imagine you getting hit in traffic and letting it slide, even if it was a slight bump

everyone has their own priorities though

unlucky mate.

I had the same thing happen, someone hit me and did a runer (I was in my sisters car, a Holden Astra).

Luckily I had the oppurtunity to give chase, and I didnt have there number plate yet. So off I went!

Was good fun, only lasted about 5 minutes before they were cornerd, some of the most fun I've ever had!

you should only really involve the cops if a car can't be driven away from the accident or someone got injured. but if your goin to respray it in a month or two and there shit all damage, id let it go cause its to much mucking around and most likely they wont find the guy who ran it you.

I heard that the police should only be involved if the incident results in an injury or an excess of $500 worth of damage, and if it is any of those 2 it would be declared an 'incident' and him leaving would result in a charge of 'Leaving the scene of an Incident/Crime'

Thats what I hear atleast, sorry to hear about your car dude.. My 2c, Dillon
