ok i just want to confirm this question ok, coz im just begining to think what the hell is going on!

ok so when u retard the timing the engine RPM whould increase right?

and when u advance the timing the engine RPM should decrease right?

im trying my best to set up my girls VW beetle but there are so many different dizzy to crank pully combinations its an absolute shambles! we brought it and it was running ok, so not knowing a thing about beetles i took it to vw shop just to check it over make sure things were ok. so anyway th guy fiddled with the timing and so i drove it away and yeah it had heeps of torque bu nothing in the top end, beetles hate RPM at the best of times , anyway i sware the thing was detonating, those old cars make a lot of little noises anyway but i sware i was.
so did some research on the wood old WWW. and found some info, so i went about setting the mixture and the timing with a timine light, yep sweet.. drove it.. ping!

hmm ok, retard the timing richen the mixture a little,....... PING! FREAK!.. reatard, richen, the mole seems like im chasing my tail, ive done away with the timing light because who knows what pully it has, u should see how many pulls with different markings on them they are, some even look the same but mean differnt! bloody germans

so i'll keep retarding and enrichening the mixture ti'll i hit a dead end i guess, just wanted to make sure i was going the right way.. i dont usually have doubts but this is just rediculous.

blaaahhh.. thanks fellas

sort of... when you spin the dizy it effects when the spark ignites... so if you advance the timing your making the spark ignite closer to top dead center, if you retard it your making it spark further away from top dead center... does that sense?

making it go "faster" or "slower" is just an effect of this...

wouldn't it be recomending leaded? try an octane booster see if that helps your pinging at all even if the timing is retarded back... and being dizzy I assume. are you disconnecting vacuum advance?

is the car actually running rich or can't u see much difference, u could have fuel supply problem. i cant see why a extremely retarded, rich mixtured car should ping. im more likely to believe i dirty fuel filter slowin flow down in the topend cause it to lean out and ping

thanks guys but yeah its defenatly not the fuel filter i only just replaces it along with all the fuel lines, and hows this i get it to a point when i m thinking im pretty happy, so i just notch the timing back a fraction to c if it got rid of all the pinging, as i was locking off the dizzy the engine just stopped.. i thort well that was weard.. so i start it up again, and went back to check the lock nut was tight and as soon as i turned it, the engine stopped again, but now for good.. she winds over but no kik... checkd its got spark, stuck a screwdriver between the points, so thats all ok, but it died all to suddenly for it to be fuel, checked it and supply was still good...
so what the heck does the condensor do? i put in new points the and it was the only thing i didnt replace, so yeah wats its purpose and could i cause the engine to stop?
