Foam filled fuel cell's

I've been searching around for a fuel cell and u have the option of the normal tank or a foam filled tank.

i was just wondering if anyone knew what the purpose of the foam is? its a big foam brick that fits inside the cell.. is it so u dont need a surge tank, stop fuel sloshing round and starving the pick up?

pretty sure thats why.

Yeah, its designed to prevent surges while going around corners. It depends ont he setup, sometimes its one or two blocks of foam in the cell. Normally run by race teams to ensure constant fuel delivery to the engine.

te foam one would have a pretty higher price i think.. but yeh pretty much to prevent surge

so if the cell is foam filled u dont need to run a surge tank? wont starve the main pump in a hektic corner?

one of these fuel cells is usually a large surge tank (approx 5L) filled with foam, not just foam in a normal tank.

ever used a sponge? its hard to get all the liquid out of it. image that in a fuel tank, it wouldn't do any better than a tank with no baffles because when it gets down to the last 1/4 of a tank you wont be able to get ANYTHING instead of getting an irregular ammount of fuel.

yeh for the extra hundred bucks u pay for a filled one u can get a surge tank anyway, look more trik too

That's where you are wrong!
The foam used is a very open cell foam which WILL allow use of all fuel in the tank whilst minimising fuel surge. Depends on your primary use of the car as to whether it is worth having or not... If you are doing track work and want to be able to run the tank down at lower levels of fuel then it is essential!

any way once the foam becomes saturated it cant absorb any more liquid so its not gonna be stealing your fuel, ok so what about for a drift application?

Again, depends on exact use. If you don't want weight over the rear wheels, so you use a light fuel load, you will probably notice benefits with fuel delivery (obviously, it would be pretty constant). But I'm not sure how many people actually run light fuel loads when drifting, so it then becomes more of a preventative thing by having the foam.

The only reason race cars use them is to prevent surge with low fuel loads and on tracks that have elevation changes. I've tried looking for pics to put up but I had no luck :(
