just thought it would be interesting to hear about ppl's love for the worlds most popular car in its sexiest shape and style early 80's FTMFW...

Well ill start... i was 17 just got my license and was given(not by choice) an XF auto wagon as my first car(BIG YELLA for short) and was into drifting and knew the xf wasnt the boat to get me to D1... so i bought a ae71 2 months after i got my license... and from that day on chased the rain in a stock cs-x 71... memorable moments were outsliding a fully setup r32 at chetwyn street in logan because he was too afraid to slide downhill in fear for his nice kit and shiney wheels :P ... crashed that one into 2 week old STi so that hurt the wallet as i wasnt insured(cover letter ran out a day before) bought another 71 for $450 at 2am one morning... and then had a break after i wrote off the 71 into 2 poles at about 80km/h... have owned a couple since as daily's and what not but now have a dedicated 70 track car that is to save me from losing my license... but yeah the love affair continues i have another 70 down the back and getting a new one as a daily...

so please share stories as i think its awesome that some peoples first love is a corolla and no matter how old and rusty they are they will always see them as porn... or maybe thats just me

wasnt that bad poor weather(rain, greasy roads) bad directions, and speeding attributed to the 80km/h crash both occupants were ok and laughing about it now but i dont do anything stupid with others in the car anymore or in public areas of major traffic/congestion...

cheers for ur concern but ill be fine...

I got my first ae71 when i was 17, had a laser as a daily and wanted a project car. I was starting to get into drift (just watching at qr and vid's) and mark (marke70) had already bought his first one (which incidently i now own).

I liked the shape and price of them and was assured of their potential with the then mysterious 4age. I found a spirit down the coast and snapped it up for $800. It wasnever registered but it still had plates so i drove it everywhere, learnt to slide in it and then sold it off after a few months.

Then i bought my nissan and wanted to get rid of the laser, so i swapped it to a mate for his ae71 for some fun times.

I will always either own one or be looking for one as long as I'm into cars/motorsport which i cant see slowing down for a long, long time to come.

Im a 1980's toyota guy so i guess i was allwaybs bound to have a corolla!.
Started looking for something that i could use for a track car years ago when i first got the mr2. Saw the ae71/ke70, realised that i could use a heap of sprinter parts on it and it went from there. Tracked down a white 82 ke70 at first. Picked it up for 150$. stupidly started pulling the engine etc out before i had the other gear to go in and it now sits in the back of the shed waiting.

Next i was told by a mate that a friend of the family had a 1984 ke70 that i could have for free, the catch being that it was 2 hours away but it was driveable and in good condition. Armed with a permit i went down to pick it up, spent all day and couldnt' get it started (to this day i never did). Went and picked it up on a trailer a few weeks later with a few mates. That car went to scrap a few days ago!

A while back i was randomly browsing on toymods for stuff for the mr2 and spotted someone had a corolla for sale, pm'd the guy and it turned out to be an ae71. Went down armed with a permit to check it out. Car turned out to be a blue spirit which i picked up for 500. 9 months later and its just on road worthy, early next year my engine etc is goin in.

was introduced to the drift scene via a mate and his 180SX

looked around to see what i could afford to "buy into" the sport. liked 86's but not the price tag that comes with them. flicked through an old ZOOM mag and found a NZ KE, matt black with a 20v headed 4AGZE that had been converted to GTE.

read a little more and found the 70 shared the same platform as the 86 so a entry level chassis was found.

mind you i found a cheap 86 before i found a 70 but switched later after writing off said 86 :P had an 86 since then but i think i will stick with the *e7* platform, i just prefer the boxy 4 door shape.

they don't need kits, don't need updated front ends and tail lights etc

rims + height = perfection

My story goes much along the same lines as Gilly. I started following the drift scene way back in the day when Denzo first appeared in Hot4s (yeah yeah I know) and really started the Aussie drift phenomenon with his purple FC RX7 at Japanese Motorsport in Adelaide. Got my brother (mate with 180 in Gilly's post I think) into it at few months later and, being a chippy vs. me being a busted ass poor uni student, he had the funds to sink into a sweetly setup 180SX running all the fruit (Top Secret tuned FConV SR20 etc etc), whilst I had to do with clutch kicking my diesel ( ) trayback Hilux ute, known as the Traffic Light Hero. This was because if you timed it right, you'd be able to sneak up the outside lane at traffic lights then take off right on the green allowing you to get juuuust infront of the car in the right hand lane before the merge, with plenty of bonus smoke. It's amazing what low ratios and plenty of torque can do.

Started to get heavily into the scene, mainly as my bro's spanner twirler (whack), and begun looking for a Levin/Trueno import. Then I got a bit involved with a mates build-up (now Biggo's Snot-rocket) and thought it looked porn, read the same article as Gilly and went looking for a KE of my own. Still wouldn't mind a Levin though :P

I'm a bit of a old-school historic racer fan (eg BDA Escorts, Lotus Cortinas etc - still have plans to do a SR 2dr Mk1 Esky down the line) thanks to my old man, so something with some age really appeals to me. Much like Gilly I love the fact that there's minimal plastic and they can look so damn low and wide. In addition, 4 doors give me more room to stash my crap (including my mates), and they can be stealth as hell

I wanted a 1st car. So i was looking around, stumped across twincam corollas. Found out about the 4agze, then found out about RWD. 2+2=5, i bought a ae71. And so the saga begins and its still not finished... Now i drive a volvo for my 1st car :P VOLVO!

But i do love building stuff and nothings been as fun as building a car from the ground up!

When i got my licence in 1988 the AE86 was dominating the 1600 class in Group A Touring car racing, i liked the 86 then, but couldn't afford one. So i bought a tidy one owner KE70 CS with 104,000 km on the clock for $7,500. I had it for 4 years and put another 90,000 km on the clock and then sold it for $4,400. I then went through a succession of Commodores & Falcons until I saw an ex Group A AE86 for sale on my105. It's now in my shed and i'm slowly restoring it to race in historic Group A.

owned an ae82 with 4age, wrote it off and thought what i could do with a 4age. Next thing i know i have 2 ae71's and a ke70 for $900 Sold 2 bought a gze and the story continues.

Needed a roadworth car for work (im long gone from that job tho) so i bought the most hardcore keto i could find.

After 4 years and 5 corollas im still in love :)

When I bought my old KE55 I was just looking for a run around while I was in school. It was dad's idea to buy it over the others because in his words "it's something we can put some sort of rediculous motor in at some stage." Too bad the rice took hold and I never ended up doing a motor conversion in it. But the new owner is fixing it up and going to decide from there whether to put a different motor in or just sell it. The main thing I loved about it was the reliability, that thing copped an absolute thrashing and still didn't die.

ive always been keen on motorsport etc, and have been into drifting for at least 5-6 years.
Got interested in the 86's from a about grade 10 when saw a bit of initial D, read up about em, found out more and more and just got really into them.
Wanted on for a first car to use in improved production, however, couldnt find one at the time.
When i decided i wanted to actually get into drifting i had a honda prelude, was at tafe, and working casually so the 71 was the right choice.
Its been going from there, and just bought ann 86 finally about a few months back so the corolla passion will keep going i spose

most of the cars i've owned were toyota, still have my first car the old corona coupe (rt51). the coupe was to rare to start chopping up and modifying so i bought a 4 door version of the same model corona (rt40) and modified that. then later i got a 4age engine and was going to put it into the rt40 but then a guy called adrian brooke who knows shit loads about 4age and ae86 told me the 4age was a good engine but the rt40 was too heavy car to put it in. he suggested i get an ae86 or ae70 and back then i had not really known about ae86's then so i sold the rt40 and i went and bought my 1st ae86 (gold one) in 1998 and never looked back. back then nobody knew what sprinters were, but now everyone knows them thanx to inital d & drift scene. owned a couple of other corollas ke35 coupe, ke70 panel van, but at the moment still have my rt51 both my ae86s and an ae82 corolla

well,

initially i was chasing an ae86, and found an old guy with a sprinter that he was looking to get rid of. it was in the usual grandpa spec, it was like he had nothing better to do than look after his car (and probably his vegie garden out the back or something). I offered him 1000 for it, and he almost fell over from surprise. he never thought it was worth that much. He never ended up getting back to me, and as far as i know he is still driving around in it.

eventually found this website at the noob stage, and saw some ke70's on here. i ended up getting a grandpa ke70, the late model, because back then i preferred the later model style. but times change, and it seems JDM quads are the way to go :D

i never had a plan for what i wanted to do with this ke70, but as its turning out, its undergoing a full rebuild it seems.

oh well, its only money :)

heh well all u guys look like u started getting into 86's around 17, when i was around 15 i always used to like playing initial D at the highpoint arcde heh yeah everyone loved it and then started liking initial D heaps one time when i was bored i decided to dl the series of initial D and i got hooked on it started falling inlove with the look and his insane trd tuned 20v! haha so at about 16 i pulled the dvds back out again had a watch and yeah fell inlove with it again after looking @ drifting again, by this time drifting was starting to become popular i started playing a game which most of you know as Live For Speed an online simulator and i always asked around if they knew where to buy an 86 i seen some very overpriced ones on carsales but wasnt keen at that price since im a poor little jobless biatch haha im a lazy kid struggling to pass school due to my poor effort but yeah going on, someone told me to look on ebay i found one in ballarat so i wnet down there and there was 3 ppl bidding on it at same time was no point due to it having a fucked 4ac and rear quater hit but was a great factory colour! very nice gold and yeah kept going on LFS and asking around and someone refered to this site and i got hooked onto this forum seeking information since im very new to mechanical work and all and found out how much truenos costed =\ at this rate was never going to get an 8-12k car at my age heh, mid this year i bought a toyota sprinter ADM 83 model with factory sunroof n bodykit n 4age i was happy as all hell fell inlove with the sprinter look enjoyed driving around on the beachside when it wanted to run, i knew these cars were old but didnt expect so many problems ! haha then i found an old primary school mate on lfs and added him, he got me hooked onto drifting while i was in the passenger seat of his 180sx type X so much power its insane heh then one day he came home and told me his mates selling his toyota trueno and snapped it at a price of $1700 while his mate paid $12,000 from holford motors 4 weeks before i got it so now im in the process of making this my dream come true ! haha

one day i decided that id become a cheapskate and save money on fuel. i had an xc falcon sedan which was awesome (guy 3 blocks away bought it off me) but fuel was expensive. spending $150 a week on fuel hurts your pay check.

i thought to myself "whats cheap on fuel?" the answer was a corolla. so i then looked around at them and thought they were all gay FF cars but then i learnt about the FR that is an ae86. so i bought one. i now spend less money on fuel (only slightly) and get to drive around much much more.

I first got into xE7x's after seeing a strange 4 door box-like car being slung around like a toy in an Option DVD. That would have been when i was about 14 (?) I was intrigued so I went internetting and found nothing :(

Then in early 2005 I went to my first drift event at QR and saw Cass in his loud as fuck red 86 giving it a red hot go, I had massive respect for him and his car :) The fact that it was different to all the Silvia's, Cefiro's, Laurel's and Skylines out there made me even more interested in it. I found out that it was an AE86 so I went internetting once again to do some research and found AE86DC :D I signed up and read up on as much as possible, the more I read, the more I wanted one.

Over the years I was motivated by watching other old school Corolla drivers driving their cars on the track and hoped that one day I could find one.

After looking around for a decent xE7x or AE86 as a first car I gave up and had an '84 Subaru Sportswagon given to me. It was such a beast  I ended up buying an '82 KE70 a few months later with plans to turn it into a drift hack but that idea died so I parted it out and ultimately, was back to square one. I was then introduced to a 4AGE'd AE86 at a very decent price so I jumped at the chance and bought it. From there I've been hooked :D

first of all....WHAT IS WITH YOU ALL AND CRASHING!!!!!

sounds like we need to learn some skilllzzz around here

and/or stop showing off?!?! (trying and failing that is)

secondly

basically im a uni student and cant afford much, but have always loved cars and been mechanically minded (doin mechanical engineering at uni), then my mate greg (bahnugget) started goin on about these old corollas, that im told ARENT corollas (ae86). but i couldn't afford one of said hachi's either. then he mentioned something about a crappy box looking car that is pretty similar that (at the time) were extremely cheap!!

and could be made to handle and go fast on a relatively tightish budget, and parts were everywhere and cheap (ke70 that is, sucks to be ae86:P)

im like....extremely cheap....IM IN!!!

and so it began a search for a ke70, ended up buying the worst example ever from a bloke down the gold coast for a grand total of 450$, but it had no rust! so it was all good, just needed a bunch of stuff to get a rwc (passed 3rd go...but it was legit!)

so the poor little ke70 is coming along nicely, its cost me alot but i we dont talk about that. but i am yet to drift it:P, but one day ill get there!

ke70 is also my main hobby, keeps me amused, and is great fun to work on and drive :2thumbs:

I 1st got into drifting when i saw some really old car dvd when i was like 9 it had a red 180sx sliding around a gokart track i thought it was fuckin mad so eveer since ive being looking and Jap street dori the true hardcore jap drivers
that do it 24/7

then when i was 15 my brother wrote off his car and my parents were gonna buy him a cheap car just to drive around untill he gets a better 1 a week later my brother got the extact same car he wrote off the week before and left my parents with the car they were gonna buy. my dad said we will go look at it and if you like it you can get it

by this time I was a member on ae86dc and check it weekly For cheap ae86's not knowing about ke70s
the time came and we went to see this car only knowing that it was a toyota corolla and it was a 81 model
as we turned into the street i saw my KE70 4 the 1st time and was hooked :D now i have 2 and im addicted if i was old enuff
and had a steady job id be sliding as much as i can :( not too 2 far now tho (y)

ha ha first started to research and get into drift, jap vids ect when i was around 14 went out to some of the early days of pt gawler, so decided i needed to start saving for a car, so i liked the coupe look but even at that stage plenty of ppl had silvias and skylines on the street and i knew i couldnt afford em so i went looking for cheaper rwd cars, came upon the mighty ae86 and loved its shape and what the jap kids did to em. so i saved and saved and eventually a ae86 came up for sale and i had evough 4 it so went had a look and bought it straight away. it was in pretty bad condition, simply things need to be replace/ re tuned so as i was only 15 i spent the next couple of months replacing windows, getting new point, fixing the dash lights -had none etc. so i could drive it as soon got my L's, once i got my P's started to experiment in the back streets near a couple of my mates places and b4 i knew it i was hooked to drifting and dragging every1 on of my mates into aswell, couple of mates now own 180, sil80, celicas, leopards but im still with my trusty 86 and still go harder that they do! ha ha

yeah also 1 of my first memories of the ke70 was this crappy old 4 door red car that tagged along with us on an ae86 cruise with a driver that seemed to love OJ (lawson) and was able to slide it as good as the other ppl on the cruise, so i though i'd look into what the hell the car was and what you could do to em, i have always liked ke70/ae71s since

YOU FARKING AE71 WRECKER!!! its people like you that make me love my hachi so much.

btw, dont take it personally bro, im jk

as for me. Ive always loved hachis. funny thing though, when i was a tike i caled them rx-7s (gimme a break i was 4) In puerto rico they were very popular and i grew up wanting one. when i tuned 14 i got my first beat up hachi, which i used thoughout high school. Later on I got my 2nd hachi, which im currently using for college. I keep them mildly tuned and dont abuse them much. I plan on keeping them in good shape so one day i can hand them down to my son.
