View Full Version : Squealing at low speeds

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone knows that this could be?
Lately I've noticed my ae86 has been making a sqealing noise when slowing down or driving at low speeds.
It sounds like a train coming to stop at a station... or like metal grinding together.
Anyway, its not continuous.. seems to be at certain times:
HEAR IT:
- Car is slowing down from around 40 down to 20km/h
- Turning into a corner (no brakes applied)
- Brakes are applied in a shopping centre carpark (eg. 10-15km/h speed). Let go of brakes dont hear it, apply brakes hear it again.
DONT HEAR IT:
- When parking the car into a spot and apply brakes.
- Applying brakes at cruising speeds
So its kind of weird, I dont hear it when I would expect to.
Ive checked the brakes, pads and rotors are fine. Plus its not always making the sound when braking.
Any ideas? Its driving me nuts and its pretty loud.

front (hub??) bearings?
when going around a continuous curve is it there? if so does light braking stop it?
and also does it occur while driving straight? if so does it stop when u wiggle to wheel (ie little turns left, right, left, right etc) ?

next time you hear it, raise the handbrake slowly and see if it goes away

i had the similar thing till i pulled out the tape measure and shifter, wheel alignment. turned out the wheels had like 2.5cms of toe in!!
the tires were squeeling their ass's off,mad sketchy to drive aswell
but it was from about 50km\h down, worse when turning.

Hi Guys,
thanks for the replies.. I've had a chance to test this out some more.
When going around a continuous curve I didnt hear the noise, but I'm sure I have before.
On slow (less than 40km/h) I find it will happen sometimes on a downward slope going straight.
Wiggling the steering wheel left makes it go away, turning right, makes it worse it seems.
Lifting the handbrake doesn't make a difference.
NFI - Are you saying you had to do a wheel alighnment to fix it?

Just do a normal service on your car, get in on the hoist and take the wheels off. The problem should be obvious.
Probably need new brake pads. If the brakes and wheel bearings seam fine and the whole car looks good, then your wheel alignment is way out. Look at tyre wear on the front tyres.
Other funny things:
stone caught in brake pad or caliper
backing plate touching disk
brake pads squeeling (dedust pads, use a dab of grease or silicon on the back of the pads. Grind a small chamfer on he pads).

I'll check it out again, but I know last time my pads were in good nick. And I got a wheel alightment and new tyres / wheels not too long ago either.
Hopefully its one of the other things:)

ive got the exact same problem in my ke70 which is just put ae86 struts into. Got new rotors, pads have got heaps left on them, ut wheel alignment is out by a looooong way. Does the same though, squeels/grinds when wheel is slightly to the right, goes away with some brake pedal/turn to the left, and you can hear the noise on a continuous turn like Dori 86 suggested. Also hear the tyres chirping a bit under cornering (the continuous corner). Am going to get a wheel alignment tomorrow so will hopefully sort it out! Glad to see im not the only one with this problem!

got a wheel alignment this afternoon and it sorted my problem out :greenbounce: :greenbounce: :greenbounce: Hopefully it'd do the same for yours! Got a bit of a noise on full lock but i think that's the guards or something else touching. Handles like its on rails too, so that's even better! :2thumbs:
