OK, i been trying to understand surge tanks today

i searched on here and found many answers, some conflicting others which is quite common when dealing with cars <_<

so heres my understanding of the parts i need for an externally mounted fuel setup:

1. surge tank
2. lift pump
3. high pressure fuel pump
4. ...........heres where my knowledge fails :(

and heres my understanding of wat it all does:

lift pump is connected to normal tank and surge tank to 'lift' petrol into the surge tank
surge tank is obviously to stop fuel feed problems
high pressure pump to feed the engine from the normal tank and surge tank etc.

i know im missing out on some things because theres is more holes on a typical surge tank than i can answer for
so my questions are:

am i right with all my defintions?
wat am i missing out on?
wat other parts or things am i missing?
how do i install all this? dont spare details please? (im a noob remember :P)

cheers guys :2thumbs:

the high pressure pump only draws fuel from the surge tank.

there should be 4 fittings on the surge tank

1. IN from the lift pump
2. OUT to the high pressure pump (this will be the largest fitting, located at the bottom of the tank)
3. IN from the fuel rail (return line)
4. OUT to the fuel tank (incase the surge tank fills up, this should be the top fitting)

Low pressure filter before low pressure pump and high pressure filter after high pressure pump?

I dont think people usually have a low pressure filter when they have a hig pressure filter in the other end, I guess it wouldn't hurt though to prolong the life of the lower pressure pump.

If so the setup you sujest seems right
