just wanna start by saying that i have searched and looked through the FAQs and so on buti can only find info on either brake conversions, or really expensive setups, this isnt what im after at this stage so im gonna try and get answers with a topic of my own :)
ok........im after an effective but not expensive option for brake upgrades, but not too cheap either :P
whether it be rotors, calipers, and pads, or just pads, im open to ALL options and opinions
cheers dudes :2thumbs:

At least start with better pads ($50~$90) and or upgrade to JDM AE86 vented front disks and calipers (~$350) *used calipers may need to be rebuilt.
If you have to get new disks, may as well opt for slotted high performance replacemnents i.e. RDA, DBA (~$250)
Upgrading to braided brake-lines will greatly improve pedal feel (~$180). Changing to a disk brake rear end can offer some more options too...
But from there on, the sky is the limit ($500+++) as most larger calipers (4-pot etc) and larger disk rotor combos will require some fabrication/off shelf kit to fit. A larger master cylinder/brake booster uprade will also be required as the std item is quite small and limited effectiveness if the rest of the braking system has been beefed up.

I personally wouldn't bother with the jdm option as 230mm disks is a bit on the small side and as 741 said the calipers might be stuffed. Want cheap? you could just get the complete strut assembly from an ra28 celica and throw it in

ive done a lot of hard driving on undersized brakes
ke70 - 218mm - junk, but useable, not worth spending money on, give up quickly with good rubber
t18 - 231 - not too bad, but no pads available
ae86 - 234 x 12 (solid) - awesome feel, reasonable with good pads, got 5 laps out of them at mallala
jdm ae86 - 234 x18 (vented) - better again with some money spent on them, expensive tho
fc 266 - TBA - we have put a bit of time into getting awesome brakes under 14s! pm me
basically dont go over board on your brakes, as long as all your fittings and cylinders are in good condition and you run quality Dot4(+) fluid and your pads are something ok, and you dont drive like a dip shit you will be fine
and remember brakes from that car have the best feel
the bigger the brakes the duller and heavier the steering
dont put some shitty wrecker ra28 struts with fucked kpi and other issues

whats kpi?

King Pin Inclination angle I guess, which effects the camber when you swap struts.

its the same angle ae86 to ra28

you sure? guy down here got pos maybe they were ra60s but sure he said 28s hrm
then its harder to get springs etc anyway

definate, I am running ra28 and it was exactly the same. I sujested ra28 because they have a 256mm disk I think.

i run ra60, good brakes, springs are fine as i converted them to coilovers
also will be using sigma arms

I've spent a long time thinking about a cheap and easy brake upgrade using wrecker parts.
And I came up against a few thorny issues. RA60 brakes are big and cheap, and the stub axles are a lot bigger, but RA60 struts give pos camber (can be fixed) and have a 90mm steering arm bolt spacing (no short steering arms exist for this spacing).
So straight RA60 stuff is no good if you want decent lock. RA40 struts suit AE86 steering arm (85mm bolt spacing) and take the RA60 hubs and discs, but there is no easy way to mount the RA60 caliper to the RA40 strut. Maybe RA23/28 struts would be easier to attach the brakes to. I haven't checked.
Option I am looking into now is XT130 struts, MX62 calipers and RA60 hubs and discs. Some minor machining required, but has been shown to work before. AE86 suspension fits the struts and I'm waiting to see how camber turns out.
Or you can go custom adaptors and put whatever you like onto whatever strut. I just can't be arsed with that right now.

how does the CA18DET rotor and calipers onto an 86/*E7* go?

are you sure the ra40 steering arms matches the ae86 ones? because I'm running ra40 front end, and the ae71 steering arms do not match the ra40 ones. as for ra60 struts not having any shorter steering arms... what about ra65/rt132/rt142 etc with power steering all of which come with shorter steering arms that bolt onto the ra60 struts.
i have found the ra40 brakes to be good. mine need a bleed and could probably do with braided lines as they are a bit spongey. but work well.
my two cents

ST141 struts with coilover sleeves instead of spring seats, R31 disks and calipers, make the adaptor to suit the calipers from 8mm plate steel.
Unsure whether the strut needs to be shortened, but I'm sure someone else can supply that information, or you can look into it further yourself.
Killer setup, seen it used on Clemo55's race car, cheap as chips for what you get, will eventually be the direction I go with my car.

Out of interest,
anyone got measurements of caliper bolt spacing for 86 struts?
:D

This is the setup I'm running at the moment although I have cheap crap pads and rotors that warp anytime some heat get into them but the camber appears to be identical to standard. Also, I'm pretty sure ra60, sa63, ra65 and mx62 rotors are all the same. I know for sure ra65 and mx62 are the same. Feel free to have a closer look at my car next time if you want to figure anything out :D

I'm pretty sure. I think I've checked it in the past, but I can do it again when I'm next out in the shed.
Just need to wait for the bloody machinist to get the struts back to me before I can check the setup.

also of note the ma61 rotors are identical to the ra60 rotors. DBA do stock a slotted one of these too

xt130 and ae86 steering arms have the same bolt spacing so you can use 86 power steering arms on xt130 struts.

sr 280mm rotors and r32 m spec calipers....overkill but works well indeed

I have also been trying to find a good brake upgrade for my ae86.
I have heard you can get a package from hoppers stoppers which use twin piston falcon calipers and camry master but i was thinking that would be overkill bigtime, plus to much unsprung weight.
I have been thinking bout r33 gtr rear brakes on the front, a mate has a full set and i took a look at the rears and thought they looked a decent size, only rouble is fab and ofcourse the cost plus i don't even think you would be able to find a master to correctly run the gtr rears.
It seems like a bit of a hard one cause you don't want to go to big, but on the other hand all the smaller brakes don't really seem worthwhile.
I have just standard now and they are so crap its not funny, halfway down any mountain and there is just no stopping lol, and i have slotted and decent pads.

you could always go the hilux 4spot upgrade, you use a peugeot 604 rotor, hilux 4wd caliper, xt130 strut and hub, a mitubishi starion master cylinder and go nuts, have a look at mine in rides and projects under sr powered rolla, works well, is fairly cheap, pads are cheap, and they fit under a 14 inch wheel

86boy, I think trying to use R33 rears is pointless. If you're going to go to the effort, use RX7 or Hilux or similar. They've been done before and designs for adaptors are available. Doing R33 rears is a world of effort and pain for no advantage.
Also upgrading the master is not 100% required. If you end up with much larger piston area then your stock master may make your pedal feel a bit spongy. But you may be able to live with it or may not even notice it. Only bother upgrading the master if it's really needed.

If you got some cash you can get these F3000 Brembos 277x24mm disks with adapters for AE86 for a touch over $3000

On Yahoo Japan of course :P oh they fit inside 15" Watanabe R-Type (15x8.5 -6) with a 3mm spacer

Mmmmmmmmmm those brembo's look awesome.
I have kinda decided to go with the hopper stoppers package, atleast i can get all the parts cheap if something fails later, plus 2 pot should be more then enough for the fronts :2thumbs: .
