Hey guys

tought id throw up a thread,

cars been great up until late, started doing some hardcore surging (at half tank) at first thought it was just a clogged fuel filter, so i changed that and got a small gain out of that (old one was totally railed) but theres still the surging problem. the car has 157xxx on it and everything is orignal.

also when i try rev the piss out of it it slugs down when it gets up top (as if the pump can't keep up with it)

so by now ur thinking yeah, must be a dud fuel pump? (my thoughts atm too)

although one thing doesnt make sense, when I'm driving for a while, just cruising speed (no floging) the car wants to die, itl start dipping so i give it more accelerator it basically says to me "na" and continues to drop revs till it stalls. if i pull over and let it sit for a bit the problem goes away, for another 10 or so mintues, then the same thing happens again.

to sum it up.
-lots of surging even in straight line, dying on me
- new fuel filter

should i be buying a new oem intank pump? could it be rooted, cloged etc?

let me know, I'm dying to get on track, its holding me back

thanks for your time guys
robo.

this happened in a mate skyline got no idea if this is the problem or not but.

I opened up the top of the tank in the boot, took out the pump assembly and i put my hand down there and picked up like a hand full of rust, and the fuel filter on the bottom of the pump was clogged in rust to, so i think what was happening was the rust was clogging the pump making it stop. Then when u pull over and let it rest all the rust settles and lets u drive off again until it clogs. This also fucked his fuel pump so, i would suggest replacing it and seeing if there is any rust in the tank. Apparently what happens in Jap land, is at the dodgy fuel stations they put water in the fuel so they can make more money and shit, which rusts out the fuel tank eventually. That or the problem with my mates was his had been sitting in the rice fields for ages lol.

Sorry for the long reply

i'm sure you could get a walbro intank pump to fit

OEM would be pretty costly and availability might be a little poor as well. Johnny Rochester may be able to enlighten you as to a part number, it wouldn't be a surprise if many a Toyota shared the same pump

When its all apart, blow both fuel and return lines out with compressed air.

Fuel problems are the worst... I pretty much had the sae prob as you with my car (carbied tho).

After changing afew mech pumps then going to elec pump, dicking around, cleaning out the tank and then replacing the whole fuel line i think i might have fixed up the problem  Also removed the fuel filter to see if that would help, which it might have in my case, Ill wack a better flowing one in after its running again.

So yeah, hope yours is an easy fix ^_^

my one has a whining sound on hot days, and u can feel the vibration through the handbrake, would that be a sign to get a new one?
