Hi,
I am currently putting a 4AGZE engine mated to a supra W5x gearbox in my AE86, and was wondering how would the standard rear diff hold to this power/torque increase? I am having standard power and 195/55/14 tyres to start with but may get it up to ~200ish bhp once its done and wider tyres (say 205/50/14 for arguments sake). I also have a Cusco 2 way LSD at the moment at the back, and its a 4.7final gear ratio (may change this to a 4.3 or 3.9 later too).
I am just wondering if I should start looking for a Hilux diff or not, thats all! as I don't want to have to change it in a few months time because the new engine has twisted it to oblivion.
:greenbounce: :2thumbs: :wtf:

zenki or kouki t series?
to be honest mate i see no need for either the W series gearbox or anything more than a T series diff unless you are going turbo. if you flog the crap outta it and not worry about your drivetrain (just slam it into gear) then you will eventually have problems if you constantly flog the car.
i have a T50 gearbox and S series diff behind my 135rwkw gze and they havent broken yet from all my thrashing. shift properly and remember your clutch is a lever not an on/off switch and you should be fine. let your clutch take the hits. if youre really nervous about it just double clutch which will improve your driving and be better on your drivetrain aswell.
you can drop the hilux diff in if youre really worried but its extra weight.

why would you want to go from 4.7 to 3.9?

i agree. theres no need for the swap unless you want fuel economy, but if youre pushing 200hp outta a gze you don't care about fuel.

I'm unsure if it's zenki or kouki, I was thinking about lowering the gear to get more out of the engine's acceleration, I'm unsure on the GZE's speed increase as I've not been in one, but I don't want to spin the wheels up to 3rd, I want the power down to aid grip as quick as I can, there really was no thought for fuel economy in it!

in that case your going the wrong way. if you want quicker accel then a 4.7 set you'll need to go higher not lower(4.9 or so)
higher the ratio-->quicker the accel, lower the ratio-->more top end.
might want to double check what ratio you've got, 4.7 is already very high.

could swap throttle bodies as a start for more top end and more power in general. really cheap and effective upgrade. basically remove all restrictions on the engine. cooler pipe etc, the factory inlet pipe that comes from the pod has a pretty sharp bend in it so get a new one made up also. wont make huge power with these mods but u wont get full bang for buck with these restrictors on with your 200bhp

The reason I wanted to drop it, is I think 4.7 might be too high for a GZE (i.e. I'd wheelspin too much as opposed to get the power down), but I'll only know when its in to be honest, it was only a thought/consideration.
I'm buying Tyrie's old gze bits which includes a bigger throttle body and piping so that side of things should be sorted now :)
Thanks for advise though so far, anyone else still have the standard diff in?

i have a t-series and standard t50 behind a turbo 4age at the moment.
its been in the car with the engine for over a year and it seems fine.
