Hey guys.

My extractors blew a massive hole out this arvo, so took it to a mates house and welded it up, as we were getting the extractors out they touched the starter motor and the chassis rails, which started shorting shit, every earth fried in the engine bay, electrical fire etc..

Made up a new earth for the battery as I cut it to stop the fire. Car wont start by itself, doesn't even kick over. We push started it and it runs like an absolute bucket of arse. Revs constantly dropping and going back up, to the point that it's undriveable.

One of the earths the insulation burnt completely off is one that runs from the back of the motor up to the same mounting bolt that the vacuum (Map?) sensor sits. Wondering if the earths would just be the problems or have I fried something.

Urgent help would be appreciated as I can't get to work tomorrow and I don't want to take more than 1 day off.

Any help would be awesome, thanks.

Dose the started engage or click? Sounds like crappy earth. Not much can damage the starting circuit. Unless you have run the welding current right through it... Check that. Tired hope this make sense.

Extractor welding took place outside the car. When we welded the pipe in the middle of the car underneath the extractors were bolted on and earths were already buggered by then.

Engine clicks, like it wants to kick the starter motor but it wont.

Have you checked the fusible links at the battery?

i HATE electrical problems and it sounds like youve hit an enormously anoying one. i feel for you mate. i wish i could help but i suck with electrics.

do NOT take it to an auto electrician. theyre a rip. sounds like something like this will cost you an arm and a leg for them to fix also.

get out a multi meter and start doing voltage drop checks on all your main cables and earthstraps, that will tell you which ones are stuffed. sounds like your startermotor has/had shorted to the motor(thus why your engine to chassis earths have fried)
your other problem is that once the main earthstraps had fused, you ecu earthing points are the next point current will travel through(ecu earths to the head, current will feed back through the ecu and then to chassis ground)

Went and got some cable from a wholesaler. Got Some 8mm black, ran some new earths (Block to chassis and Head to Firewall/Vacuum sensor) also got some 14mm red and ran to the starter motor from the battery, that cable was also fried. Seems to be working perfectly now. Thanks for the help guys. :D

Yeah.. Damn.. Haha. Nah I need the money. Gotta buy some new extractors very soon. Dunno how long the dodgey welds are going to hold on it. Then it'll be loud as fuck again.
