I have got an AE86 running a 16V 4AGE just wondering what's the best exhaust/muffler to use, both branded ones and budget ones, in terms of power gain and sound.

what? well ive been thru two 86's trd copy extractors do give a good note and a bit more power after u put in 98 and advance timing it does make a difference in outlet edge, with extractors and back i always go to local places which i normally get a 2 1/4 overdiff setup and ask them to make it as close to chassis as they can so it clears ground.

Don't run one. Just have extractors.
Do some searching please there is plenty of info on this.

i remember once on my trueno the flange of the extractors and the exhaust come loose thanks to the shitty install, lol was so lound and no backpressure, it was such a pig to get to a mechanic and then find out that was the problem

you dont need backpressure, having that air leaked would of tottaly messed up the airflow and the resonance of the pipes, hence the lack of power

You dont need back pressure??? Put a 6 inch exhaust system on a 4age and see how well it goes

iv driven a gze on just extractors to the exhaust shop. goes perfectly fine. however i think i smashed some peeps eardrums in the quick 1.3km squirt to get there.
also have driven it with the extractors>zorst flange loose and it farts like an inside out squirrel and loses alot of power.
conclusion : extractors only is better than extractors and a piece of shit leaky exhaust.
sam is correct.

6 inch eh? dont get confused with low overall airspeed, weak resonance pulses and a high diffecnce between the inner and outer flow of the pipe.
Last time I checked the record holder for the all motor category was an engine with a set of 4-1s and then a taped pipe about 800mm long going straight out the side. Its making crazy power and it definately woudlnt have any at all backpressure

There is a noticeable loss in torque in the lower rev range on an NA 4age withe just the extractors, though it does rev out much better. The Group A 86's that ran at bathurst have the extractors with a 2.5" outlet ending at the begining of the passenger floor pan.
I love driving past schools at 8:30am with just extractors :D

someone needs to code a bot that picks out key words and phrases in peoples tech question posts, and suggest topics in the tech articles area which have similar words and phrases...

Yeh but isnt putting a pipe on the side of an engine going to create backpressure no matter how long or round?? just choosing the right size pipe is the issue.. coz if there was no back pressure wouldnt the air flow the same way it would with no pipe.. eg shit
Not having a go at you.. i may be wrong, so is this not right?

You don't need any backpressure at all.
But you do need a collector where 2 or 4 pipes meet together. Exhaust traveling in one pipe creates a lower pressure in the other pipes which helps with scavanging (getting exhaust out of the chamber and fresh air in).
After a short length of pipe after the collector, I believe nothing else is needed (for power).
As a test. Blow compressed air down 1 pipe of a set of extractors, then feel with your hand the vacuum in the other 3.
If you just ran 4 pipes from the motor with no collector, you miss out on the scavanging effect of a 4-1 collector.

after reading a few website info about exhaust systems on google...
to answer the question, What's the best exhaust for an AE86 4AGE 16V?
the answer is what we already know
4-1 extractors, TRDs or something similar with good qualities bends for nice exhaust flow
2.15-2.5" pipe
those 2 will determine power output, anything else, more or less arnt going to get u more power, either going to just make it sounds louder or quieter...such as Cat or no Cat, muffler or no muffler, 2" tip or 5" cannon...
so in saying that, my exhaust system is going to consist of, TRD copy extractors, cat, muffler, and simple sports tip, not a cannon!! with 2.15" pipe...
i honestly want a very quiet exhaust, trying to get it to a standard note, i'll even run a silencer if i have to when driving on the road, cause i want the engine to roar and not some metal pipping...
i'll let you guys know what it sounds like too as soon as i get around to getting it in the car xD, so keen to hear how my theory will turn out

If you want a quiet standard note, don't get trd copies. Get factory rwd 4-2-1's, they are a really nice design and length and give a real crisp note. Coupled with a regular cat, 2" pipe over diff into a single lukey, its not loud when you want to cruise (no drone) and it sounds good when you give it some (crystal 4age note).
I would only use trd copies if you can't get the factory 4-2-1's

that and the mid range power your likely to lose with a 4-2-1 design. I will be doing my own testing on my pipes compared to some 4-1s

The trd copies are nothing to sneeze about. Having had both, TRD copies seemed to have no performance benefit. For the price, they are good to get a fwd 4age to rwd easily, but I would not consider them a beneficial upgrade over stock headers.
Some quality 4-1's or 4-2-1's would be much better, although if its gonna go on a stock motor there is really no point.
