View Full Version : Expensive Rims - Sakura's

Patric
6th March 2008, 03:50 PM
As some of you may or may not know.
Hayashi racing made a nice set of Rims called Sakura's in the early eighties. They came with really cool offsets.

They have re released them.

http://www.hayashiracing.com/yayoi/yayoi.html

At first I thought it was for a set.. but
I read it again. about 900 a corner.

I know made in Japan means it will be very good quality but almost 4k for a set of RIMS. Damn.

so worth it.

fucking nice looking rims, personally i couldnt justify spending that type of figure on four metal circles, however if one managed to win lotto, one would purchase such rims and the drop of a hat.

someone buy them then i will buy them off of you so they are second hand and therefore cheaper.
thanks

I have bought some..
14x8 -11
Not cheap either, actually, they burnt fucking holes in both my side pockets and my back pockets. They will be worth it though, they are so damn pimp. I'm pretty sure this is the last ever run to happen on these, but again it could just be the jappo salesman trying to get more buyers.

I can't wait for them to arrive, Will be going on my car as soon as the get here and I will be flaring the guards when they are on

Sakura cherry blossoms are the nicest wheels ever. If i won lotto, i would buy 2 pairs. Congratulations starni_boy on gettin some, they are really rare arent they?

starni_boy
6th March 2008, 04:52 PM
Not too rare, any average joe can get them, just a matter of timing i guess. I had been keeping my eye out for 6 months or so before now, then I got an email from a guy I know in Japan saying there was another run coming up and if i wanted in on it.

After much thinking about it I decided to bite the bullet and get some, a good idea/investment through my eyes, but probably not through some other peoples.

They arent rare at this moment as they are doing another run, but after this they will turn back to hard to find parts.

AU$1 > 100Yen = WIN!!!

The Hayashi/Techno Racing Yayoi a.k.a. Sakura or Cherry Blossoms are beautiful wheels  Personally I think they suit older cars like vintage corolla TE-27 or hakosuka KPGC10 and other nostalgic classics rather than KE70's and AE86's but would still look hot none the less

Patric these wheels are an investment and you will have them for years, even if you change cars ;) I'm sure they'll find a home on your next project.

I don't understand everyones attraction too these wheels. Personally i'm not a fan.

Besides possibly having a different taste in wheels (more of a fan of works and ssr's) i think it could be the fact that i'm also not a fan of 14", much rather 15".

Just my personal opinion.

A couple of good pay packets to be spent, but anyone who knows what they are will admire your car when they spot it. They have been making those rims for quite a while now, the links been saved away on my computer for quite a while.. Mad dish and offset, so they can charge what they want I sopose

Nos4ag's old wheels aren't worth that much  and SSR Mesh are far more common than Yayoi's and therefore less valuable.
Larger sizes 8J+ and -ve offsets will still fetch around $1000 for a pair.

(I think you have been fibbed to my friend. There is only one pair of infamous 15x11 SSR's in SA which were valued about 1/10 your claimed value when they arrived from Japan.)

N2 cars almost all run 9's and 10's i.e. Tsuchiya has Watanabe F: 15x9.5 -19, R: 15x10 -25
11's would most likely be from some other circuit machine or bozuko spec thing.

The sakuras? They are definately not $400 per rim. They are more than that, much more.

They are more about $1100 per rim to your door. By the time you add up currency conversions, shipping, paypal fees and the initial cost of the rim, it all adds up quick.

No son there are actually N2 spec meshies with magnesium centers and they come in 15x11 only
they were special order specifically for AE86 N2 race cars very limited number made.
to me sakuras are ok well my girlfriend likes them but there are much more expensive wheels out there..
also you can still buy these off the shelf so yeah anyone can buy them, discontinued wheels are so much cooler.

kaibeecee
8th March 2008, 08:44 PM
just to clarify, true "N2 spec" units only came in 13's for use in the original series, and 14's in the final year the series was run. TRD N2 kits only could accomodate 13's & 14's, no more.

the kits accomdating 15's were only manufactured by certain teams when Hot Version began to run the race again at the Hot Version festival.

i think the term 'N2 spec' gets thrown around too much without reason.

8th March 2008, 08:57 PM
Well I'm not sure where you get your info from - The original N2 cars in the 80's used TRD Tosco 13x8 and 13x9 "light alloy" mags which are much rarer than Sakura's or SSR's etc These have been discontinued for sometime, but were listed in the TRD Special Edition Bible released in 1996 (also reprinted 2002).

I have all the recent N2 Tsukuba rounds in Hot Version DVDs 1998-2007 and I have not seen any entrant use a 15x11. Many use Watanabe, SSR and Works amoung others, even when some cars like CBY and Tec-Arts were using 16's and 17's - none wider than 10J. Genuine magnesium wheels are expensive but $3000 each for a 15... I'm sceptical, especially if the centre is the only Mg part. Race use only 3-Piece wheels generally have rim sections ~4mm so are more likely to bend as opposed to road wheels which are +5mm for strength.

List price (Tax inc.) of Watanabe R-Type in Magnesium sizes listed as on TRD N2.

Yeah thats all good but these wheels are a discontinued item and only a few were made
you probally wont see these wheels on current N2 cars I'm talking late 80's dude
and your quoting off- off the the shelf prices, like i said you can't just buy these off the shelf
the value is probally more of a rarity thing.
i have a dvd of these wheels on a trd N2 levin and they talk about them in detail
so thats where i get my information.

8th March 2008, 09:41 PM
Which DVD are you talking about? In the Hot Version series (Best Motoring #41 & #42) the TRD N2 Levin driven by Tsuchiya used 14x8.5 and 14x9 Formula Mesh in 1998 (when it was still all white) then used Watanabe R-Type Mg in 1999 onwards. See this clip at 3:23 TRD N2 Levin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZcxS2pQiM0) also note it's lap time of Tsukuba 1:03.68 later shaved back to 1:00 flat ;) some N2 cars are now going into 59 second range :o
Your SSR's will have the production date stamped on the back of the casting in a circle around it. Along with No. 3 SpeedStar, Star Formula, 515 Made in Japan etc Also if the are Magnesium Mg will also be marked on them (Will probably say "competition use only" too).

Shinobi - I'm not at all jealous of your wheels :P I like mine just fine thanks and ideally think 15x8.5 -6,-12,-21 offsets is the perfect size for AE86 with mild flared guards. Also thanks for your comments :D but Nos4ag got his "15x11" wheels for $350 and later he passed them in at auction with starting bid $1000, so not sure how much you paid for them, but you may have paid too much... I saw the pics a while ago and from memory they needed to be cleaned up.

What I'm trying so hard to tell you is that 15x11's were not used in N2 in the 80's - 13x8, 13x9 upto 14x9, 14x10 were, and in the revived N2 series 1998 todate 15x9,15x10 are the norm (225/585 slicks used all round) these already scrub the N2 flares :o so when you get a chance to fit your wheels with some N2 flares let me know how it goes.

I agree the 15x11 is a rare size and the main reason would be of the limited application. Would be more at home on a KPGC10 Hakosuka Skyline GTR with big flares or Bosozoku machine. Out of interest what is the offset of your wheels? Do they still have the decal on the inside rim it will state size, offset, type: A, B, C, Inspector, etc. Otherwise if you measured the width across the rim edge-edge and got 11", the nominal rim width bead-bead is 10J which would be more likely and make more sense as N2 specs.

Example below: these would be even more aggressive offset than N2 spec rims at 14x10J -41 and at auction range from 90000yen to 150000yen ($1000-$1500 a pair)

Nice N2 replica. In that pic the fronts look like 15x9 -2 (similar to what I have as rears, maybe slightly more offset) The rears appear to only be 15x10 -? hard to tell because can't see where the mesh starts about -15.

and i have also done that same work to recon a whole set of ssrs to the same level 741 has
around 6 months before him and i know how hard it is (not very)
and i would be proud to own 741's wheels cos they are nice.

Lets not give Shinobisan a hard time ;) I'm not trying to disprove you, just inform you correctly ^_^ I guess I'm just pedantic and have an eye for details. Sometimes this can be a good thing and othertimes it can drive me and others crazy, so no offense.
I've been into AE86's for a long time, almost 10 years and accumulated a large knowledge base. so I'm always happy to contribute on topics or queries I feel I have answers or insights to or just sharing random obscure info (thought thats what the blog forum concept was about  )

Anyway I see you agree restoring wheels is that not that hard (if you have access to the right tools facilities or know the right people) it is arduous at times and patience is required to get good results and worth it in the end. I wish I documented the restoration on my other wheels a few years ago, they still look 1000% better then when I found them stacked in the corner of a friends workshop. I also would rather post finished results or a simple before/after shot, rather than 50 shots of the steps taken from all angles that you could almost animate  but it's good to see progress of build up, stick up some shots - as they say "a picture tells a thousand words"

there was a limited run of 15" x 8j -5 offset I think. They only made 20 sets and they gt sold out 2years ago i think. So 15s are in existence.

Check the first page of his readers ride thread (which is on the second page of readers rides.)

They look mint! (and so they should, being brand new and all.) Really going to look super against the grey colour you've chosen for the body.

yeah so give or take $1600-1750 for a set + freight ~$2200-$2500 odd landed is not too bad I guess for widths wider than 8's in negative offset especially in OG styles like SSR Formula Mesh, Hayashi Street or Watanabe

Konakid
3rd July 2008, 09:15 PM
Yeah freight would be about 400 by ship so could get a set for bit over 2K i reckon if you can wait, fucking win.

EDIT: Full set of 14x8J -3 Mesh at Y31500 equals around $1250 before shipping. Hmmmm i may start saving.

the streets are over priced i think, they can't technically be as good as the Wata's..? as far as weight/alloy they use. the mesh though, fuck me, so good to see theyre doing the proper old school offsets, not those weak ones the new mk 1/2/3's come in. such easy rims to stretch tires on, and very repairable should the unthinkable happen. some one should start build a car around a set..
