Hey guys,

Wanting to clean up my engine bay. Is it possible to replace the existing fan with a thermo fan? If so what fan would fit? as in which car would i have to get it out of to do the conversion?

Thanks,

Alex

You can grab them new from SuperCheap Auto, not overly expensive. They're a lot better than your stocko fan :P

Just run a few bolts threw the radiator.

Errrr........

A shrouded clutch fan is ALOT more effective than a thermofan.

 Was a good cooling upgrade on my old car and my mates 12AT. Meh I'm prob wrong, ignore me

A shrouded clutch fan?

Just a clutch fan on its own isn't particularly effective, the shroud that channels the airflow / suction makes it so efficient.

They come factory on almost all cars before they introduced shrouded thermos standard.

You have the plastic fan, then you have the fan clutch, which slips, allowing the engine to rev freely instead without having to spin the fan at the same speed as the motor.

The shroud bolts on to the radiator.it's a big ugly plastic thing.

I'll try and find a picture.

Is there any particular car that has a thermo fan that will fit a ke perfectly?

i doubt anything will fit perfectly on, but I'm sure most of them from the wreckers will come pretty close, nothing a few wiretires can't fix. just go to the wreckers and experiment on a ke70 there.

a fan from the wreckers (off a rwd car) is probably better than a thermo fan from super cheap (without a shroud). since the wreckers fan will come with a shroud.

having said that, i have a thermo fan i bought from super cheap, not using a shroud, just bolted it straight onto the radiator. obviously not optimal, but it does the job.

but if i was going to do it again, i would just go to wreckers and buy a thermo fan off a rwd car and make it fit. prolly cheaper than super cheap fan (mine was bout 60$)

just remember you need to find a way of making it turn on when the car gets hot, and turn off again when it cools down. no point having it going all the time.

fwd celica ones work well, they are slim and have a good shroud

i put one on my ae71. luckily there was a keto at the wreckers with the conversion already done :D . you can fit any fan, the best fir is something that is JUSt too big. since it will give you the optimum cooling and still fit. brackets etc are easy to make. wiring is easy too. the conversion i got had a thermostat from a fridge on it. but you can hard wire the fan to ignition ( DO NOT HARD WIRE TO BATTERY, it'll never turn off), or hav a switch in the car to turn it on/off.

here's a not very good pic of my fan set-up. when picking a fan, something with a good solid looking shround and lots of fins usually works best. and get one from a newish car as they will be in better condition and be thinner etc...

Well there you go, its been done! I think my custom mounts will be a few good trusty cable ties. Is that the original radiator the ke came with in your picture? its hard to see. Thanks Resol

thats my ae71. those custom mounts actually mount to the same screw point on the rad that the original shroud would have. i wouldn't use cable ties if i were you, you cooling system runs at 170+ degrees, and cable ties are plastic.....not worth the hassel. bit of galv steel plate (1mm thick) cut it with tin snips, marked some holes and i was done.

ok, note to self; Do not use cable ties to fix thermo fan to radiator. I could be wrong but, i think i read somewhere that you could directly transplant a Hyundai excel radiator into a ke70 or sprinter??? and hyundai excel would come with thermo fan which would save the need of doing a fan mod. Correct me if I'm wrong!!!

a little off topic but
i have a 4k with a clutch fan
and its the only 4k ive seen with a clutch fan, all my others and a 5k as well as a bunch i checked at u pull it had the no clutch
is my 4k special? lol
also does a shroud help when the car is stationary?

ke70 have diff front rad support to ae71, and ae86. so don't know how much "adjustment" would be needed to fit one up. the ke70's do have small rad's so it might be a worthwhile upgrade (and would be good for any future eng swaps?).

shrouds help everything. when your driving air is directed through it increasing the effectiveness of the fan. when stationary, the fan is the only source of 'moving air' so again the shroud will help concentrate the direction of the air.

the single best thing about thermo fans has nothing to do with cooling. the factory clutch fan put so much drag on the engine. so taking it off frees up the engine, helps it to rev up quicker, and give you more all round power. same with the water pump, aircon, p/s etc
the less the engine has to do the better the final drive power/response etc will be.
