iv got a diff from a 31 silo (lsd) i wanna put in my ke but someone told me today that you cant put a mini spool or anything in a 31 lsd, is this true?

i thought it'd just be the same as like a 32 or something??

anyone here shed some light on this?

cheers

Someone is speaking shit. There is nothing strange about R31 diffs. You can get open centres, LSDs and spools for them, and they can of course be welded. The only odditty is that the axles actually thin out a little after the splines so it's difficult if not impossible to shorten the axles by a small amount.

Back in the day I looked into an R31 rear end, and it looked like a decent centre (Kaaz do one), 4.1 Pintara ratio and R31 axles are a good combo.

Also note that if you have a factory silo LSD, the chances it still works and isn't totally flogged are about the same as happening to pick up a super-model at a female weight lifting contest.

should definately take a minispool as i think the silo r31's are the same as VL diffs and theres plenty of them going around on ebay.

welding it was a little different to what im used to, i had to open up the diff to weld up the spider gears- might be what your mate saw.

i had a factory silo LSD- it could lap roundabouts in the wet and occaisionally could get it sliding around corners but had to play with it. you can shim it up and it will be veryy strong- but wont last long at all due to their dodgey design.

i run a 31 diff in my KE, 4.1, mini spooled... and its strong as hell and great all round!

if i feel like spending the cash i might upgrade to a Kazz lol

you can remove the LSD part of the centre and then fit the mini spool to it, nothing hard there.

as floody said...

I'd look into alternatives re handbrake too, if its for drifting, as they have an absolutely woeful stock handbrake.

mate of mine had a 31 drift car and he had some dude come out and instal a hydro using the stock handbrake and stuff for reasonably cheap, might do that...

simon, did you get your 31 diff shortened or just left it that length?

I am thinking R31 diff for my 4AGTE as they are strong as hell and also disk rear end. I would get a hydro for it as well easy as to install.

Question: If you have a R31 diff assy. to change the gears to pinty is it just a straght center swap?

stock length, its 30mm wider each side so why bother shortening it.

as for handbrake solutions... could do what i did.

Is that just another pair of r31 calipers Simon?

nah the braking pair is a pair of blue bird calipers and the hydro handbrake pair is some KE70 front calipers... the offset just happens to be perfect to suit the R31 rotor.

was so easy to make too. and works sooo well. i use a custom hydro handbrake made up using a s13 clutch master cyln.

if you want, you can also replace the stock r31 calipers with commodore (Vn-VS) items. they are suitable for the hydraulic handbreak and they bolt up to the diff, no mods required.
