Hey guys i am about to start my w58 to 4a conversion on my ae86 i am just wondering whats some problems some of you guys came across during the conversion... Like transmission tunnel .. shifter location on the stock ae86 and what was needed to make it look like a stock job.. also anything that made you stress over it..

Cheers reece

if I had the time I would do some research and write a FAQ on this as it is asked about a bit. Unfortunetly I don't have the time to spare right now and wont have for a long time. Maybe someone else who has actually done it can do it?

I would also be interested.

There is talk about some adapter plate that works and eliminates the need for a bellhousing but who makes them and how much compared to the bellhousing? and how it works with the input shaft?

i have tried to research this but its only the part where they need xmembers etc.. i am more interested in the mods needed get the w58 to work in the stock ae86 body and problems that they came across.. So i am asking the guys that have performed this conversion into there sprinter

ok first up I think a W58 is a bad idea for a sprinter unless it has a lexus V8. I say W55 all the way and the shofter ends up in the right position to fit like factory.

Sorry guys I don't have time to research and then write an article on this for atleast half a year

reece you can come check out my setup if you want. its a W59 but externally the same as a W58.

no body mods required, my shifter is in the correct position and everything looks factory (except for the bellhousing)

sam, you can get the W58 shifter in the correct position easily, i have it that way as does my house mate in his ke70.

W58 has closer ratio gear set which is why they are so popular in Sprinters. AFAIK W55 and W58 are basically the same size physically?

not so

with the exception of first gear the w55 has almost identical ratios to the t50

don't know why you like stock t50 gear ratios so much - i reckon theyre crap - only good split is 3-4, 1-2 way to big a gap, 2-3 only a little better. w58 is way better imo

you like your gears further apart? if so it would be like trading in a trueno 4.3:1 diff ratio gearset and putting in a 3.9:1
