Hi,

i was playing around with the wiring in my engine bay of my project car today and came across a pair of BIG redbacks....

my car is currently on 4 jack stands unfinished so i can't just spray out the bay with high pressure water, but i need a way to get rid of them so that i can finish up with the wiring....

any ideas/suggestions?

cheers

What about one of those bug bombs? The ones you use on an entire room and stuff like that...

(Dunno how it would go with your dogs as well though)

Just pretend like you're spraying it, put some plastic over it and tape the thing up?

federal
14th June 2008, 05:38 PM
that would work...

Oh and to the people that posted the really REALLY dumb answers, please don't, someones asking for help, not hindrance!

well i was going to suggest starting the engine...but since i assume you don't have the engine going...that might not work:P

bug spray sounds good...that will get them good....

not much else you can do without fumigating the area....but that's a little extreme...

hmmm....ideally i would get some high pressure water through the bay....but at the moment i have a fair bit of exposed wiring from the new wiring layout....

i also need to hit the underside of the car heavily aswell...way to many webs under there to really want to stick my hand in....

....ok...

anyone in sa have a portable high pressure water thingy??

^^^ good idea, works for mites aswell, I use boiling water, eucalypt oil, and lemon juice to spray in my reptile and scorp tanks to protect against mites, I don't think the scorp like it though, but its works

I have this problem with my new house . . . alot of redbacks lurking around. I used about 4 bug bombs in two days and got about 20 of the suckers trying to run away. That cleared them for a good while :turned:

slow method at my house was to breed daddy long legs till the red backs got overthrown. sadly since there is valuable electrical wiring nearby don't flame throw em with a can of degreaser or deodorant. just get them with degreaser or carbi cleaner. that stuff hurts shit loads in your own eyes so imagine how a spider with sensitive hairs and 8 eyes feels. wet em enough and they'll drop to the floor for a good stomp.

high pressure water doesnt work. if you don't get them the first time they will remember you. the larger they are the less afraid of you ive found. mind you I'm talking about red back asses as big as your thumb nail huge.

fire or chamicals always the winners when it comes to spiders

...as mentioned - a bit of fly/bug spray. Not that hard really - common sense seems to be rare these days!?

try yelling at them with your shirt off haha

nah i think the most logical answer would be to use some bug spray a couple times to make sure all of them are gone

the snake is pure gold...

Seriously, spiders are not easy to get rid of, they hide in place like behind the glass in your side mirrors and in the windshield edging.

Bug spray/bombs also don't always get the smart ones. They're tough and smart. Best way is to squash them. Good luck!

have only had this problem when a car is left on grass, for extended periods.

I'm guessing a surface spray insecticide would work wonders.

mind you i've never killed a spider, because they eat flies and mozzies. never been bitten by a spider...
but the other two have racked probably litres of my blood over the years.

edit: regarding flies and blood loss, you wont understand unless youve lived near the qld border... i used to live halfway between port maquarie and coffs harbour, far from the coast...... and used to get blow-flies the size of beer lids, which would just sting the fuck outta ya to get a feed. one of the funniest moments of my childhood was some guy showing me.... that if you stick a blade of grass up the giant blow fly's butt, it can only fly vertically. bloody hilarious watching those fuckers head directly up until the eye cannot see.

Can you guys get "Ripcord" over in Auzzie??

If so..(might have to go to a rural sales store that sales farm supplies, or a building depot(they are the places that sell it here in NZ))...that stuff works wonders!!
You just spray it around the outside of the house (around the bottom) and anything that walks over that surface for the next 4-6months dies straight away.

I do my place every 4 months and we never get any insects in here......even keeps the flys away too.

I got a massive redback jump at me when I was cleaning some wheels . . . about the size of my palm. Luckily I had the jif in hand and fing doused it in JIFF! It tried to run around the rim to get away . . . it just helped me spread the jif around the rim before it died :greenbounce:

If you can get it on a trailer maybe someone you know has a garage that could use some bug bombs too?

It's true about the bigger spiders being less afraid too! I've heard of someone flicking a huntsman off the wall with a rubber band and it ran straight for him. Thinking the spider was just retarded he took a big long step over it, the the fucker turned around! ended up having to man up and step on him with a bare foot.

march flies?

when there in your arm tense up and they can't get there nose or whatever out. thats when you get your revenge,
burn the fuckers wings off, or catch him, freeze him, then stick his legs to string, then when he comes to you have a fly on a string,

saw this on tv. something like 5% vinegar and the rest water into a spray bottle. spray in area where webs are found. spiders will never come back
