Bought an imported 4age 86kw red top (from corolla) from a jap auto spare importer
swapped the engine with my old one, 4age 86kw blue top
wired it all up and good to go

turn the keys and the most the car ever done was ran for 3seconds...now it just sits cranking over and over

checked fuel, got fuel
checked timming, timming is fine
checked fusses, all good

i got no other clue what to check for....

the only light that shows on the dash is the BRAKE on Reds....but I'm not sure if it ever showed more then just BRAKE, been to long since the ae86 has moved

yeah need help, maybe the ECU?..i don't know... help would be much appreciated

3 things you need to run an engine... you've all ready checked one...

1: Fuel
2: Spark
3: compression

1: make sure your injectors are going by putting a long screw driver on them, getting a mate to turn it over, and putting your ear on the handle end of the screw driver, you should hear a clicking if they're working properly. Make fure your fuel is getting to the injectors

2: Unscrew your spark plugs , put the leads on, hold the threaded part to the engine and turn it over and see if you have a spark (do this one spark plug at a time)... make sure you don't turn it over without it grounded as it can give you a little shock... if it isn't working, change your plugs. if it still doesn't work, change your leads. If it still doesn't work, have a look at your dizzy or coils... and make sure they're getting a charge/signal.

3: do i really need to explain how to do a compression test?

those are the first things i would do if mine wasn't starting... then i would look further into timing and the computer side of stuff

good luck :2thumbs:

have u checked all the spark plugs? all firing fine?
fuel pressure alright?
compression ok?
sensors, ecu, vacuum lines

right now it can be anything...thnx for the help..i'll try these again a 5th time

i'll be posting back I'm sure =/

if it actually runs then i would be looking further than what has been posted. although do check them just to make sure.

vacuum leaks are a good place to start. make sure there are no holes in your intake manifold side that aren't blocked up or going where they are supposed to be. i believe a good way to test this is to get some easy start and spray it around the outside of suspected spots, if your engine changes in revs as you squirt it around, then you will be able to find your problem.

also make sure your injectors are actually squirting in fuel, did you get them overhauled at all? you can test them by pulling out your spark plugs, and crank it over, and you should see mist of petrol coming out the spark plug holes. should be a nice fine mist.

also another thing to check, after it dies after the 3 secs, pull out a spark plug:

is it wet? if its wet then id be looking electrical, you might have a break down in spark after the engine gets going, so looking at spark plug condition, coil condition, points setup/condensor if its a points dizzy.

just a quick note on this, if you do have a points dizzy i had the exact same problem with my 4k, would start but not idel, was the little condensor on the side of the dizzy (might be internal on a 4age one not sure)

is it dry? if its dry i would be looking at fuel pressure/supply. you can also grab hold of the fuel supply to the injector rail, it should be pressurized (ie firm to squeeze) all the time. if while you are cranking/when it dies you can feel pipe getting easier to squeez (ie less pressure inside) then something is amiss with the fuel side of things.

hope this helps, report back with some results!

A good thing to try is to make sure you've got a check engine light wired up and see if you can get any error codes out of the ECU.

4ac power is my younger bro, umm further more to the problem .. it cranks but it doesnt have a strong crank ... like its crank on a low battery.... . we've tried jump starting it with our corolla... but no luck ..... will jump starting it with say a bigger car (4wd ) help the voltage output? thought it might be earthing but tired all earth wires and got my old earthing kit and earth the whole engine bay ... didnt help.

don't know it if this make any sense but the motor sounds sticky... when it cranks ....

bench test the starter motor ?

yeah i was thinking maybe the starter motor too.... it did seem a bit dogey the first time we pulled the engine out .. will try it.

sounds like the timing is to far advanced to me

try it with the spark plug leads pulled off, should go alot faster if the timing is out.

if it does go faster just retard the timing until it starts.

this bitch still wont work....

I'm guessing its coming down to somthing more complicated then just spark and fuel, somthing more like compression

so how do i test compression and how do i repair it?...

pull out all the plugs and turn it over on the starter motor and listen, if you've got half decent compression, you'll know about it.

thnx for all the replies so far, they have all helped me understand what my issues might be

just hoping for the best now, i'll keep posting if anything else comes up

cheers

sounds like you havnt wired up your alternator properly, pull the wires off chuck a battery charger on it and try and run it.

ok so its been long and this post is old already

but i finally got off my ass again and tried to get the engine going

i was able to clutch start the car

the engine is working for sure

as soon as the car turned on it stayed on, it was able to start on its own too after i turn it off

then when i tried to tune the timming so it would run properly, it wouldn't start all over again

so is it defiantly that starter motor that I'm having troubles with starting the car? i can't even try to tune it if it wont even run

what else can you guys advise me to replace to insure that when i do get it running it wont fail on me

!!much appreciated!! =]

sounds like it could be the starter/alt/batt

good news!!

engine CRANKS AND STARTS!!

yeah =.=''' bought a working 4age 100kw starter motor, new battery

engine turns on and idals now...
ok now heres the next issue..
engine works....but wont rev like a normal working engine..
I'm sure most of yous that have done engine swaps or conversion knows what I'm talking about

everytime you give it gas, it goes into this deep pitch *like the engine is going to stall* tone

I'm thinking it might be the timming belt! and that!, i have no idea how to set up correctly

any guides on what i could check or direct me in the right direction?..

i know most of you guys might just say, bring it to the mechanics, but sometimes you gatta do it on your own, even with help

help will be much appreciated

So what did you do to fix the rev problem?
