If you get a good high flow metal cat, you will hardly notice (if at all) lost kw..
Its better to have a cat in my views, do your bit for the environment!
And I don't own a cat either, I'm more of a dog person.

doesnt hurt performance much, nice to know your car is slightly more legal, i vote yes.
a cat right at the start and a single resonator is all you need for a not too noticeably loud system too.

I'm pretty sure that if a cop catches you running no cat when you are supposed to, you can get jailed for 25 years to life for destroying the environment or something.

So a stock KE has to have that resonator or cat? i chopped mine out last week due to a crack in my exhaust and am only running the muffler at the rear end. Bad?

your car doesn't need a cat as long as the car AND motor are pre 1986.

yep id say thats bad
i heard its more of a punishment if you get caught with a gutted cat than it is with having no cat at all.
also keep in mind that the need for a cat goes with your engine, i didn't think ke70's had them at all? but if you stick a 4age in, then you need one cause those engines came with them.
your best bet is just to get a cat of a larger car, a skyline or a falcon, they will have more than enough flow for our little 1.6L engines, cheap to.
and yes cats suck, I'm allergic to them...make my eyes go all watery and red.......dogs rock!

yeh it will effect performace!!
the cat is the most restrictive part of your exhaust.
EPA can fine you hard for not having one of those

is there a road side test that cops can pull out and go 'Hmmm this has too much emissions, your going to jail for 25 years!' so having no cat on a car is second only to murdering someone in jail time? extremely hard to believe?

what clinton said ^^ it seems a little harsh to get 25 years when other crimes get next to no jail time
balistic

I don't think its 25 years but - but last I checked it was a very big fine (many $1000's)
I have known cops to a take photographs of certain areas of the car (including exhaust configuration) on the side of the road when they issue you with an EPA infringement - so they can compare if you've changed anything when it gets properly inspected later on.

yep there is, my mate got done in SA, had a gas anylser, and a db tester..
if u get a new cat, highflow preferlaby will not affect that much at all, always try to get a cat the same size as ur zorts system, not under sized(i.e: 2inch cat with a 2.5inch zorst)
hope that helps

if its a decent cat I don't see how it would affect the sound or perfomance. i went over the top and fitted a proper "Metal-cat" branded cat.

I run a cat, doesnt seem to affect the performance in anyway....
If your in Qld its one of the first things theyll check, better off just running one... and it is apparently proven that you can get away with not running one but the cops wont listen, youll have to take it to the courts.
First night of having my motor in the cop got underneath the car to check i had one... luckily for me i only got done for no mod plate and excessively low (high)

another way they can check for a gutted cat is with a laser temp gun, as cats get very hot when theyre working compared to the rest of the exhaust pipe, so they test tempreature before the cat, on the cat and after and compare results.
I'm not 100% sure if its 25 yrs imprisonment as I heard this from someone else, but I do know its a rather large fine (up to $100,000) as I asked when i renewed my rego about 5 months ago. She didnt know about the jail time involved, but she seemed to think there would be at least something.

Fine for not having a catalytic converter is up to $10000 courtesy of the EPA...
On another note, you can also be fined if your vehicle does not meet the emissions standard it
was designed to... eg. All the new commodore owners who put a non standard exhaust on their car
and need their car to be ""re-tuned"" (programers just turn off the warning light about the cat not working properly)
will be fined if the EPA tests them.
A good quality, high flow cat isnt that expesive... $10000 is
cheers

fines for no cat,
1st time, $500, yellow sticker
2nd, $5000 red sticker
3rd, we'll see yo in court to give you your $10-15000 fine.
then if you dob a workshop in for doing it, they get $50,000 fine, and a visit to court.
run a cat, but chances of getting caught are fairly slim

I dunno where you got that info from because its wrong, all vehicles produced prior to the 1st of July 1976 are exempt from the emission requirements as that was when they brought the requirements in, and doesn't matter what engine you have in the car.

You are both right. But there is more to emmission control than just a cat i.e. carbon cannisters, fuel vapour return, exhaust gas recirculation etc etc.
all vehicles produced prior to the 1st of July 1976 are exempt from the emission requirements (i.e. carbon cannisters, fuel vapour return, exhaust gas recirculation, cat) as long as they have an engine in them that is built before 1st july 1976. If your vehicle is built between '76 and '86 then you have to have all the emission stuff your car came out with from the factory except a cat (not many cars built then had cats anyway). After 1986 you must have a cat and meet all emission requirements.
If you put a later model engine in your pre 1976 car from another car that that was built after the laws came in, you have to run all the emission stuff that that car came out with.

Vote 1 to piss off the cat
If you get done, it will no doubt be a very stern warning, just change it then...

Having no cat makes the car sound like a race exhuast (der) Which gives it a real bark, you can hear every single bit of exhaust gas leave the ports, especially when coupled with a jap tuned length system with no baffles! Porn!
Ill prob run a gutted cat in my car, half my mates havent got cats, and they have never been checked for them when they been pulled over, your average officer isnt to cluey about that sort of shit (at least in adelaide)
