Had a pocket bike, had all the road legal stuff (headlights, indicators, etc.) and had many run in's with the police (and this is in tasmania where the road laws are slack) according to every cop I spoke with, You can't register them but you can't ride them without registration and an applicable licence (motorcycle licence), I argued that because the engine was under 50cc it was exempt from licencing, and all it needed was rego, they all flat out said no. Even the guys at the inspection station laughed when I pulled in there on a very orange mini bike and asked for them to do a roadworthy inspection on it....... Until I told them I was serious........ It passed inspection, but they told me it just would never happen getting something like that rego'd........
Might be different wherever you are, but that's my experience with them........

its a no in qld mate. its not often that you get caught though, so it is worth it seen as you only get a warning 1st time. once you get a warning, stop riding it on the street!

i have an original 68 z50 that can be reg'd, I'm rebuilding it at the moment.
honda made various bikes from 50 70 90 and 110 all flat singles that can be used for rego purposes. Funnily enough all the 50 70 and 90 all use the same bottom end and have only small differences in gear box. big bore kits are available for the honda ct110 etc to 145, you can get as much as 25hp out of one relatively easily. I have a postie at the moment that will be doing the cross country charity ride in the not too distant future.
But relatively speaking, it would be easy enough to go to a motovert style shop such as pit boss empire, that also sell online if thats handy for you, a 110 can be had for under 400 bucks with carb and cdi and everything, then just go to the wreckers and go but a bore for a ct110 or what ever for a small penny, swap them over, the bore is where the engine number is located, also on the bottom end. Just swap them over and rego your new fresh engine, get the bore, bored and sleeved if need be depending on how fresh it is, but these things don't ever really make enough power to break themselves.
With the re-release of the honda monkey bike all new parts for the original 93-69 rego z50j's are easy as to pick up, you can get brand new chrome headlight bars turners mud guard seat cover etc for about 400 bucks, so if you get one just clean up the tank frame and engine, suspension etc and you can have one that looked like it rolled off the show room floor for under 800 bucks. Once mine is done it will be worth close to 6 k.

The law in QLD has changed and not alot of people know about it (i found out the hard way), It is no longer under 50cc's = no rego, its now under 34 or 36 and the electric ones are also a problem, They do some calculation with the volts and motor size.

yeah all good. i was thinking along the lines of ADR's and using the motor in something scratch built.
An ICV motorcycle has no emissions laws applied to it though ive since found out, only noise restrictions. I'm just deciding if the "flat" motor is going to work aesthetically and if it will have enough punch.
interesting point though bealey, those motors in the chinese bikes are based on the postie motor? i didnt know that..

almost an exact replica of the honda engine that has changed little since the 60's
of course you can have other options of the usual xr250 style stuff if your happy with the air cooled path, which seems to be what you want.
