Are Cusco LSD's serviceable?

Hey guys, I've got a Cusco 1 way LSD and was wondering if you can service/replace the clutch packs if need be?
I've heard the newer models are serviceable... but haven't found any info on the older 1 way LSD's

he is a cusco dealer so should be able to find out for you. just see if you can give him the model and type of lsd it is.

he supplied my rebuild kit not long ago but that was for rs 2 way

Hmm I'll have to check and see which type mine is. What's the best way to identify if it's an MZ or RS.

I'm assuming there are only two types of cusco LSDs?

mz and rs use the same clutch packs
the only way to tell the difference is when you pull it apart.
the rs uses only clutch packs in the center while the mz uses cones and then clutch packs
either way if you only want to replace the clutch packs they the same.

i think what you need to find out is wether your lsd is an mz/rs or an older style. if you strip it down and take a photo of the clutchs i can tell you wether its an mz/rs

Oh, so there is an older model to the MZ/RS?
Hmm and my next question was going to be, is there a service manual around for the cusco LSD? Would be nice to have torque settings/shim selection and what not.

the service packs come with instructions...

... but they in japanese haha.

i understood some of it so was ok. but you don really need it it is pretty basic to rebuild

i would just recommend new crownwheel bolts from toyota and someone who knows how to set up preloads and backlash for lsd diffs to do that for you

Yeah I was thinking of rebuilding the packs myself and getting the housing sent to a proper diff shop to get the alignment, and backlash of the crown and pinion sorted. When I bought the LSD the crown wheel was absolutely screwed, chips and gouges all over it... which I assume was from an improper install.

From the AE86 service manual, it looked kinda tricky getting the mating surfaces of the crown and pinion correct. Had to use a paste to check the footprint of the contact surfaces.

Has anyone done this themselves, does it only look tricky or is it infact a bit of an art?

yeah setting up a diff is a bit of an art. it takes a few goes to get the preloads and backlash right.

don't even bother attempting it if your crownwheel warped or in bad shape you won't get it right.

why do you wanna rebuild it in the first place??

Well, I not 100% sure it needs a rebuild. Bought it awhile back but haven't had the chance to stick her in yet.
However as mentioned before the crown was fairly stripped, so I'm considering pulling it apart to check if any shards of steel had gotten into the packs. Figured I may as well find out what a rebuild kit is worth and change the clutch packs if the current ones have been scored.
