Hey guys.
Just about to start my spray job on my Spreuno and undecided on whether to go 2pack or Acrylic.
I'll be spraying at home, but I now live in Suburbia of Brisbane so wanted to know if anyone found the thinners of 2pack paint excessive for a home job.

For those wondering 'what the hell I'm on about?' then it's because spray painting without a booth is illegal to my knowledge. My neighbors have not complained in the past about me spraying Acrylic on panels, but I'm thinking 2pack might be a different kettle of fish.

Please share your experience in spraying 2pack in the suburbs.

2pac is pretty dangerous, in which you could kill yourself and neighbours from the fumes. But when it gets into open air, it's not as bad, but still not that good an idea.

Acrylic is easier to paint, prep and setup. A good thing to do is go down to Supercheap, grab the portable carport, then get a few metres of tarp and hang it down to have your own makeshift spray booth. Works well.

Though, 2pac shits over Acrylic in terms of quality and life. Acrylic constantly needs buffing and perhaps cutting back later on, 2pac will always have its gloss and will just need a polish/wax over a long period of time.

Get Acrylic,

Mix with 2K hardener

Instant cheaper spec 2K :)

P.S 2Pak (especially reds and clears) contain a lot of IsoCyanate aka Cyanide...

Unless you get the "ISO Free" shit, don't be spraying that stuff outdoors, you'll kill everybody

If you spray it in a booth wear a full body suit and drinks LOTS of water

I am planning on spraying my car soon, was gonna get an acrylic paint. Is'nt the standard sprinter paint acrylic?

I know that 2pack is super hazadous, but is acrylic paint as bad for you? I was gonna be spraying in a garage with just a face mask.

Also are you spraying high or low pressure?

Acrylic paint hasn't got ISO Cyanates in it (Cyanide)

Go eat a Cyanide pill and see how long your heart keeps beating...

2Pak paint finishes off the gun, and its what MOST manufacturers use. It is more durable, a lot harder and doesn't require a cut & polish after its been sprayed. Whereas acrylic paintjobs look nasty until you give them a polish up :)

HVLP

2PAK

Full length arms and legs, plus a mask and such

Anyone doing something in acrylic is just kidding themselves, i know i once tricked myself into thinking "with just a buff, this acrylic will be the bomb yo!", but it just isn't anywhere near as UV or scratch resistant

2PAK or go home, unless its a show car, then you can do either

Acrylic = more work , easier spray, not so toxic
2pack = less work, harder spray, very toxic

if you have experience spraying go 2pack, if you have little or none go acrylic.

with both make sure you protect yourself and wear a decent mask. if youre going 2pack there are no masks you can buy that will say theyre good for 2pack, put in double or triple the filters.

The more i hear about how deadly it is i feel happier paying someone else to do it lol. Especially since i don't want a shit job.

Or just go for a solvent type full facemask filter and get inside the spraybooth suit like the guys who do it all day every day do it.

I am going to stick with my original idea of spraying my car.

Thanks for the replies.

I've actually painted before in both Acrylic and 2k.
My setup is a 100L Ingersoll Rand Compressor with 1.4 - 2.0 mm HVLP spray guns.
I've even got the Marquee tent and attached ventilators to the tops of them to help with air flow.
However I haven't sprayed 2k in suburban areas before.
If I still had my acreage block I'd have no second thoughts about spraying 2k.
Just wanted to gauge people's seriousness on this issue as the smell can be overwhelming and any negative responses would be magnified ten fold by neighboring residents.

The shell was completely rubbed back to bare metal and now has two coats of high build etch primer with increased levels of phosphoric acid and zinc to prevent future rust. Now I just have to deal with the dilemma of 2pack or Acrylic, but I think I've set my mind on using a 2k paint and borrow my mate's booth on a Sunday when he's not working.

One spray job at home in 2K won't kill you or anyone else.

Prolonged exposure causes brain damage, respiritory problems and the toxins can be absorbed through the skin/tear ducts/mucous membranes or inhaled.

Use a chemical mask, with activated charcoal finters in it and do it in a ventilated area. You'll have trouble with dust, so earth the car.

Many people say that wetting the floor causes issues, but I assume they have not tried it. I have, and a damp floor helps enourmously with dust issues and had no effect on the job. Perhaps if it was a very hot day, the evaporating water could be an issue, but bear in mind that many heated booths run water in the floor to carry/catch the overspray and dust and move it out of the booth. This is in addition to the air movement.

probably no worse then hitting the drinks and smoking a pack and a half of smokes.

Nick, How can the clear and red have more iso in it when the iso is in the hardener, not the colour/clear? I checked my debeer safety datasheets and can confirm this.

I have sprayed acrylic and 2k, and 2k is much easier to spray. The main reason is that 2K requires many, many less coats. The chances of a fuckup whe you are spraying 10 coats is far greater than when you spray 4-5.

Probably in the older 2paks... Only going off what i've been told. You could be correct.

My uncle used to run a paintshop years ago, and I saw all the safety stuff he had to do to get approval for his spray booth and paint / tinter / thinners storage area.

Yup, it's pretty strict. It's probably irresponsible to paint 2k at home, but hey, people street skid too...........

bahnugget and i painted my ke70 with acrylic, in my carport that had plastic sheets on all the walls

knowone complained, and we're still alive!!!, its not exactly pleasant, but we had some relatively decent gas masks and they worked quite well, bit nasty on your eyes though, get some goggles!

2pak is another story....

that stuff is nasty...you need a proper booth and the proper safety equipment, and i believe the booth you use has to be a special one that filters the exhaust gases through water or something.

depends what kind of job you want as well, also on the colour.

if your going to go a light color, and its only a drift beast, maybe just go enamel. its shine off the gun like 2pak, only problem is its not as hardy, so wont last long if its out in the weather.

Dark colours get owned the worst, people say light colours are fine though.

just use an iso free 2pak it comes off the gun like regular 2pak and is not as poisonousness it can be painted outside and its cheaper. It also can go over acrylic primer and wont fry up due to its acrylic base. A few brands make it protec and hichem are some. the protec shit is about $100 for four litres and another $60 for hardener and reducer add 30 for some colours. The only problem is that you can only get flat colours and no metallic's or pearls, however you can add this in a clear coat if you really want.

it's not that bad, painted my car and didn't have any complaints from the naighbvours

I'm painting my car next weekend. I bought the paint today and had a good chat to the old bloke behind the counter about it.

For what I am doing, I'm spraying it with enamel, as its easy to apply, off the gun gloss and will fill in minor imperfections. My car is garaged 99.999% of the time so it doesn't need to withstand weather conditions etc., just needs to look good from a distance.

Also, another reason to use enamel is that its not as bad for the environment/painter, only need to use a disposable mask and thats it.

I bought 4L of gloss white and 4L of thinners. I got change from $100. If it turns out good, then I'll be very happy.
