View Full Version : Guard Flaring

Hey guys,

Total noob question here I guess. What's the best way to go about flaring my guards, I've got some rough ideas from all the KE's and AE's around here but I'm not entirely confident to go cutting up my guards when a KE70 at the local wreckers is quite hard to come by. Also run out of metal in the rear, so hopefully origin copies will save it…

Best way to put it, I want them to look like the ones on Biggo's green KE hahah.

I figure I cut the bit off where the plastic clips on to, cut most of that edge down and bend the rest of it out in line with the original flare?

[attachment=28656:_DSC7020.jpg] [attachment=28657:_DSC7027.jpg]

Or will I regret cutting those clips off?
Or am I totally wrong?

Don't want the razor sharp edge look either.

Oh and eventually I'll have corona LCA's on and bigger, wider wheels.

I can't seem to find much info on this whole process, so is it worth writing a tech article when I do figure it out haha…

Thanks

it will be hard to get bolt ons to look like biggos guard rear guards. basically what i did for the front guards what i pulled the black plastic out and pulled the lip that has been folded under and got that all flat. then got someone to drive the car SLOWLY forward as i put a big poll up in thereand used the tyre as a pivot to pump the guards out. you can repeat this for the rear guards, although it will most probly explode if you have any rust at all in there...

Yes you need to cut those clips off

and more.

i usually trim it back a few mm too, makes it ALOT easier at the next stage when youre trying to stretch the lip out.

you still do want a folded edge for sure though, so you trim it back, fold the very inner lip back in on itself, the start hammering it out.

do it on the car too or you will warp the gaurd badly and it wont go back on right.

if you havnt got your lca and wide wheels sorted yet don't even bother. get your wheels first then build your guard around it

build your car around your wheels

run a 8j rear and 7.5j front

close to zero or neg offset!

Thanks for all the info guy's, I'll start hackin em up tommoro after lunch.

Like the idea of building the car around the wheels :D Thats why I'm goin bolt-on rear flares, if I ever find a pair...

So people don't pull the inside lip out?

Hell no. Makes the guard lower than factory and doesnt suit the rear, looks wak

what did you use? a pole? or did you do the old fashioned hammer?

i will be doing this very soon myself and probably doing a bit of both, extra track comes at a cost to the guards, but my god it looks sexy.

by the way, looks sick, if you're concered with it, just chuck a bit of bog and it'll look smooth, but personally i don't mind a car thats a little piggy and rough.......

for i quick flare to patch up rust on my rears till i get around to repairing properly i got ae71 fronts and cut them up to make bolt ons  i can use them later on to do what vtec did apart from ill keep the flat bit on the outa edge so it looks stockish.

Well, I cut all the inside bit off (I could explain better with a photo), but just before the factory fold under the car, put it back on the car and then bent the rest out with pliers...

Then hammered the old fold out as much as possible to make it near smooth (lazy unbolted it off the car by then...)

After that was all done I reckon i only gained an extra 7mm either side  She is going to look a little rough, but maybe bolt-on's all round one day haha. But I am glad someone likes my work lol.

Today was spent smoothing it all out on the front guards and coming to the realisation that my rear guards are an absolute disaster haha. Wide S13 no chance of seing the rest of the car? Might be an option for me now, I'm gettin desparate lol.

The white guard came out the best (just about brand new before I got at it) The red guard has had a bit of previous work before I got to it so the bottom of its all mangled.

And in the last pic the white guards trying to jump off, looks slightly fatter. I think they've grown on me overnight.
