I am mounting my generic ebay race seat (fibreglass one peice, side mount) in the AE86. I think I have it sorted. I wonder if I can see how others have done it.

I had tryed to use the stock AE86 sliding rails, but even with modification they put the seat too high I think. I could buy a low mount sliding rail off ebay or someone else, but I decided to mount it fixed with no slider. I have made solid rails with 25 x 5mm steel. I think I need to mount the seat as low as possiable.

I wonder if I can buy just those 90 degree plates with the holes drilled in them.

Hi Jonny - I'm about to mount a set of S6 rx7 seats in mine, and am planning to use a flat steel bar to bridge the original mounting holes. This way I can bend the bar to keep the mounting position low and level, and then tap into the bar so that I can bolt the seats in using the rx7 rails. I need to get this approved by an engineer first, but it's my current idea as it means I don't destroy the seats or the original mounting points in the car.

If you want to mount as low as possible, side-mount rails straight to the floor is the way to go. Just remember if you are not using factory seat rail holes, to reinforce the mounting points with (min) 3mm plate about 40mmx50mm. I used the mounting plates with nut attached (like harness mounting points from Revolution Racegear) at front and factory seat rail holes rear. Main issue with mounting this way in AE86, the floor is not level and the cross rail steps up towards the trans tunnel which can make lining everything up a bit tricky

Not a real good photo, but this how they made the mounts for mine, basically two bits of square hollow section welded with re-enforcing plates at the intersection with the floor:

Will take some better pics for you if you like? This was done by a professional race car fabrication mob and is typically how they do it he said.
