View Full Version : Which gauge brand to get?

I need water temp, oil temp and pressure gauges, and after having cheap gauges fail on me before i want to get some decent ones.
Of all the brands i reckon the greddy and apexi would fit well in a ae86 interior, and even the saber ones would look ok but know nothing about them.
What are your opinions on these brands? For the money the greddy and apexi gauges would have to be freakin good quality for $250-300 each. The saber ones look half decent and are less than half the price at $120 each.
All prices were sourced from modyourcar.com.au, so might be able to get them cheaper if i look around?
Cheers.

I'll give you my personal recommendation of Defi or Blitz having installed both. Greddy ones are great as well
remember, you get what you pay for when it comes to gauges, like everything else

my personal opinion is that Gready, defi, blitz....are all overpriced and not sure on the quality... (not bagging AJPS or anyone that sells/stocks them)
i never buy anything other than VDO
my dad is a marine electrician and has been buying and installing these gauges for like last 10years, and hasn't had a problem (i get a trade discount too!)
the quality of VDO is excellent, they have PROPER catalogues of all their guages AND senders, with lots of information for picking the right one.
anddd you can buy them from repco etc, just have to make sure the dude behind the counter can read numbers....

I would definently go for omori but can't find them anywhere. I wanna go for a more oldschool look, the defi gauges look great but are more of a modern look, i reckon the greddy gauges are more period correct for a sprinter.

aren't most of the omori gauges mechanical gauges though?? i thought the black faced ones were all mech and the white ones were elec..
the greddy ones are nice look a bit more "period" with the black face adn simple numbering

Does anyone know anything about saber gauges? Like were there made or anything, just being doing some searching on them and everyone says there great etc etc but can't find a whole lot of info on the gauge itself.

Electric, all brands are going that way now anyways.
The greddy ones i was looking at are discontinued on the greddy site, yet there still on modyourcar.com.au, so i don't know if you can actually get them still?
There is also a new autometer gauge coming out, but there all imperial measurements which sucks.

little known fact:
defi is owned by nippon-seiki, who make instrument panels for BMW, Daihatsu, DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi Motor, Subaru and Suzuki
they're also the largest manufacturer of motorcycle clusters
dunno about you, but if a company is making instrument panels for BMW and the others mentioned, they know their shit inside out, therefore, i don't doubt their quality one bit

Lamco, Omori, Defi all good, as are Smiths, VDO, Autometer... Just pick a brand thats stood the test of time. Leb spec China shit for the lose, i.e. DRFT, Sabre etc.

I bought some autometer sport comp mechanicals. Very well known brand, not bad on price. Trying to sell them to fund some electric gauges. Mechanical is just so hard to hook up without pulling off the head and tapping into galleries etc.. Tried getting some fittings made up to tee into a sandwich plate, but the fitting was like 200mm long just to run an oil temp probe.
Would love some omori's to keep it old school, don't like all the new shiny shit. Hence the original purchase of black faced autometers.

All our cars bar 1, run autometer "ultralite" series.
Known brand, been around, and can be brought at decent prices new from the states, pending exchange rate
and before you ask, metric series are avail in the usa too
white faced omori in the ceffy, I believe theyre about 10 years old and all are mech
