Waste of money IMHO, if you get a defect notice and have to get your 86 inspected they will measure the sound at the loudest setting and plus, cops drive around with the aircon on, windows up and radio on so they will see the thing is not standard anyway whether they can hear it or not, and if they were the type of cops to carry a noise detector (state traffic branch) they would know what the varex exhaust is anyway.
so really, unless you don't want your girlfriends parents knowing your a hoon when you pick her up or some wacky reason like that, theres no real point in spending the extra dosh.
Just my 2c.

i second that.
firstly they're not recommended for street use - which defies the entire purpose.
from their website::
VAREX MUFFLERS ARE DESIGNED AND ENGINEERED WITH THE INTENTION FOR RACE AND OFF-ROAD USE ONLY.
dunno if this make them illegal or what.
bit expensive and also only really designed for wrx as a bolt on accessory.

can always just get the ECV (exhaust control valve) instead. Same princable, just not in a big ass muffler, instead it just uses a butterfly (much like a throttle body) in the piping somewhere in your exhaust.... more stealth and just as effective..
although I would just get a straight through system with a resonator and straight through muffler with whatever tip/muffler you want on the end...... sounds good and not overly loud in low to mid revs

Correct, any exhaust or exhaust system which includes a volume control device such has the flap on varex mufflers and apexi's butterfly addons is a defect even with the flap open and not exceeding the sound limite.
But I have never been defected and saved me more than once, when being pulled over I just close the flap and it sounds like a normal stock exhaust.

ECV is worse because it almost blockes the exhaust while the varex with the flap fully close forces the fumes through different pipes.

Just get a quiet black 2.25" exhaust. It's the motor noise you want to hear, not exhaust drone. It's legal, doesn't sound like crap, and doesn't look like some big homo fart tin.

I'm a huge fan of them but not for a 86, way too big.
They are really practical for a daily which you hack at nights and not too many cops are going
to look to find its a varex. The motor is a nissan wiper motor too so no dramas if they stuff up.

So,a stock S class mercedes exhaust is defective? they run a variable muffler. so do late model Jags from memory.
it's only illegal if the variable valve dumps before the muffler - gives you open pipes. and even then, that's only because it'll be to loud. the system itself isn't illegal.

as for the 'off-road use only' part, that's a standard disclaimer a LOT of companies put on their parts,to reduce their potential liability. it doesn't mean that the part is inherently illegal, just that they haven't spent the cash on getting the part certified as legal for road use by the powers that be. it puts the onus back on the purchaser to ensure that it's legal for him to fit,or not.

^^^ I was expecting a comment like that, factory cars with these devices are not a defect because they have been tested and scrutinized to meet their emissions policy.
At least in NSW its a defect but I think you can get it engineered proven the emmissions testing for that age car has been done and under the illegal level.

Yeah I don't see the point for a 4ag/ze, can't go wrong with 2.5inch.
