Hey People,
Anyone know of any detailed links/picture guides for do it yourself panel and paint? Got a bit aof rust to remove and considering panting a few spots on my car.
The more detailed the better.
Cheers people.

having done a few of my own cars, i'd never do it again really.
Its very time consuming to do it all yourself and do it properly

I did a rush job on my skyline, took me 4 solid weekends for a dodge job and a lot of hard work, I can't imagine doing it properly.
It is satisfying to do it yourself and not pay someone though

it is very satisfying doing it yourself. i just did my 3rd car respray on my daily ae92. it takes a LOT of practice to get good at it to get a decent job. all my jobs have been pretty ghetto. my latest is good with no runs but it didnt flow the best.
if its a thrasher i suggest doing it yourself, otherwise i suggest paying a professional.
search google for info about painting. i used a article when i first started off from street machine when they did the southern comfort cruiser. search for 'street machine southern comfort'.

thats not a rush job!!! (actually i guess it is, sorry thought ti said 4 solid weeks, but 4 solid weekends...thats a damn good effort too)
one week it took me and bahnugget to respray the ke70, from fully driveable, to sanded, to primered, to top coat, to clear coat. using a proper spray gun/booth(ie the garage) and acylic paint
there is a heck of alot of dents on it still, and i think some of my "repairing" actually made it worse....
having said that, its all the one colour and the actual paint came up quite well, pretty shiny (Where its been buffed....)
and for bout 300$ in materials it came up quite good. the painting is easy as (bout 4 hrs to paint the whole thing), its the fixing dents/sanding that is sucky...even sanding is ok..but how the crap they get dents smooth....beyond me!!!
i would never attempt it again though, especially on a nice car, the only reason i resprayed was cause all the panels were different colors. and now its all the same color and it keeps the po-po happy. pluss it was a learning experience too, something different to try.

with a bit of practice and a few tips its amazing how much faster you can become at it. i remember tiny repairs i used to fuck about for hours.. think i had the shape right, painted it and wow, lumpy bumpy shit house. now, my whole rear 1/4, which has rust repairs all along the window sill, and a hastily welded on new flare section, shaped in a lazy day.
if i hard an air body file, i reckon like 2 hours.
it depends if you think developing these skills is worth the bother. but yeah your first attempts are likely gonna end up somewhat disappointing/frustrating, yet still satisfying.

its all in the prep work.
if you take your time to do it right first time, the painting is easy......

to fix dents and shape damage def grab speed file cuts down time heaps or if you have a decent belt driven 2.5hp + compressor grab an air powered body file as slydar said those things are fucking wonderful to shape with.

buy spray cans, get a bonnet, sand it down, practice and see what you can do, sand that back, go again and practice makes perfect, then move onto the spray gun
what ever you do when DIYing, never do on the original first!! lol speeking from experience
i say try it urself, and if u dont like it, atleast you wont have to pay a pro for the rubbing back =]

ill keep you updated, as over next month or two ill be doing it myself.
but if it doesnt turn out right on the bonnet, ill be doing everything bar the final coats.
ill let the pro finish the job
saves money giving them a fully prepped car.
