ok, the gas has gone on my hatch, and wont stay up by itself..... annoying.
but i called toyota parts and apparantly they dont make that part anymore....... more annoying
is there a generic part i can get? like a universal strut from a camping shop?
or does a later model toyota part fit on?
or does anyone know where in sydney you can get them regassed. i heard its never as good as getting new ones though

Go into Autobarn or Repco
Take on of your existing struts in
Ask for something similar in size
They will check thru all the Ford/Holden/Mitsu/Toyota ones and with any luck, come out to greet you with a new pair of struts :)
Back when I got my first car (Datsun Sunny) the struts were fucked
I think I got some Falcon ones and they were still going strong 10 years later :)

Carry a timber plank in your boot and use it to hold the boot up ^^
Otherwise take it to a reconditioning shop. Cost me $60 to recondition both from a place in shop in Slacks Creek, QLD.

Half a broom handle. Helps to beat away douchebags too.
But yeah, might see about getting new ones. Mine are shite.

oh yeah, and make sure you have them done properly. the struts in my car lift the hatch up with such force it would surely break a jaw if you were in the way

grab a pair out of an AE82 seca. they're longer,so you won't be banging your head on the hatch anymore. lifts it a good 6" or so more.
wrecker's, or re-gas FTW.

just went to 5 different stores looking for struts. the perfect length struts are for a ae101
monroe maxlift part no.ML4338, about 50 bucks each
i bought 2 but only put one on and left the other original because like that its perfect weight.
the originals will have to be cut up like this,

seriously ae82 hatch gas struts! I put some in my old 86 and the only difference was they opened the hatch a bit further which was actually really handy cos you don't have to hunch over as far to get stuff out of the boot!!

One of the sluts had a new burson sticker on it so must be available.

with the original struts the ball joint is held in by a little retaining clip that is hard to get out (so i cut the strut ends open instead) and the new struts are the more modern type that have a clip on the outside that can be pried up with a small screwdriver. the original ball joints are still used
the original clip was here (red circle)
