Hey guys i have found a toyota tarago diff (manual) i want to use in my sprinter, its from a 1984 tarago.

Do you have to use a tarago diff from a yr21 or yr22? or is yr20 ok aswell, being from an 1984 tarago i have a feeling it may be a yr20 im not sure would i be able to use this diff and will it be an f-series?

This may be of use to you...

AFAIK YR20 and 21 ran E series, and it was only the YR22 that came with an F.

Personally I've played with a YR22 which had an F series according to both the build plate and my eye when I pulled the thing out. Never played with a YR20 or YR21.

Well, if you are taking the diff out of the car, then YOU can look at the ID place and tell us what diff it is. As Hen said, probably E series. I could look it up, but only you can be sure because YOU are the one with the ID plate.

It probably isn't LSD, and isn't a straight bolt in.

Im pretty sure F series sat behind the EFI engines.. E series were with carbed engines

yr22 had e series in the carby model and the f series came behind the efi model

if its already out of the car rip the centre out and measure crown wheel

f series are 7.5 inch and e series i think are 7.1??

ok guys thanx heaps for the info tried searching but fail you guys are the shit ta, the diff is getting delivered 2moro if its an e-series or f im not fussed either way because the t18 lasted me a long time and im only making 240hp so if its an e-series its only .4" smaller 1mm smaller in axle width aswell to the f-series so the e-series will still be a good upgrade and cheap also :)

t18 6.7"
e-series 7.1"
f-series 7.5"

YR20 Solid Axle (leaf) E292: 7.1", 4.10:1, 2 pinions, Open
4x114.3 1415mm Drum
YR21 Solid Axle (leaf) E282: 7.1", 4.30:1, 2 pinions, Open
4x114.3 1415mm Drum
YR22 Solid Axle (leaf) F282: 7.5", 4.30:1, 2 pinions, Open
4x114.3 1445mm Drum

YR21 also had an F-series, 4.1:1 open diff :)

I cant remember what year model, i just remember it was def YR21

It sounds like E vs F isn't just 20 vs 21 vs 22 in the Taragos.

It could well be as suggested above that the EFI motors (4YE) got an F because of their axle bending torque, while the carbed motors got Es since they couldn't twist a pretzel. The YR22 I stripped was EFI and F.

im not sure whats shorter but all of the above are longer then a T series.. u prolly just have to get one shortened..

and like a said before im pretty sure u should disregard the chasis code and take note of weather its EFI or carb engine.. like has been said just going with Yr20 21 or 22 doesnt mean its holding an F series or an E series... im not sure if the housings are different either.. i can take a snap of my F series tomorrrow and post a pic.. if someone can slap up a pic of an E series.

theyre not leaf, theyre all coil rear. lite ace is leaf. YR20 and 21 is definitely E series and only YR22 Tarago and later YR22 Spacia is F series. 4.1 and 4.3 is readily available depending on whether theyre auto and manual and centre only is same as later 30 series wombat tarago (these are wider and 5 stud).

You can use the axels and centre from E seies and put it in a T-18 housing to save having to change mounts. I found this out after pulling apart my T-18 diff to put in LSD and change ratio. Had been done by previous owner.
You need to grind 5mm over all from the edge of the T-18 diff housing case so the centre form the E series will fit in. Then you need to drill out the holes on the E series diff case a size larger. Will fit in no problems and the axels are a bit thicker at the ends near the teeth on the E series.

okay bit confused from that, but i got the diff today and going to strip and clean it down tommorow so ill take some pics of it, the diff came from a 1984 "carby" tarago so it will be a e-series but ill find the code so i know what ration it has, but have found that 84 models did cross over to EFI that year so as previously mentioned the e-series diff crosses over to f at that stage

only prob with the e series is you can't get a LSD center for it.
Not a prob if you just want to weld the centre or do the mods mentioned above though...

yea just locker for me, stripped both diffs down today and dropping the housings off to final drive to have the mounts cut off and welded on, gotta take some pics and measurements, my pinion and crown wheel are completley stuffed theres about 10 teeth that have completley shorn off so will look good
