Car - ae86

part in question - front brakes, can include rear in anyone has info on how to convert t series drums into rotors?

problem - want complete info on what brakes work, how to fit them ie rx7 conversion and wilwood 4pot upgrade, what size wheels you need for clearance etc.

personal situation - running xt130 struts and thus brakes, and 14" wheels but have 15's on had to in necessary or i dont sell them, want to know if 86 brakes have same mounting as xt130? if not has anyone mounted bigger brakes to xt130 struts etc?

hope thats enough info for some advice :)

cheers, Josef.

ive got hilux calipers with peugeot rotors on xt130 struts and ive got about 4-5mm clearance with 15's.

23614
i have alot of room around the caliper just not much room at the front where the green thing is pointing.
23615
its more about the room at the back of the rim than the overall diameter.

i've got bmw 2002 4 piston calipers and unknown vented rotors, calipers are a straight bolt on, have some mounts as factory 86 calipers. will get pics tomorrow

Sounds very interesting!

There's about a million options here, most of which have been discussed in detail (apart from the BMW option above, that sounds new).

- Keep your XT130 struts and use Hilux calipers and Peugot rotors.
- Keep struts and use MX62 calipers and RA60 hubs and rotors.
- Swap back to AE86 struts and buy RX7 adaptors and suited rotors.
- Whatever else your imagination can come up with

As for rear brakes, search Toymods for a thread by GA61XX about discs onto T series drum diffs.

the bmw 2002 calipers as very similar to the volvo 240 girling 4 pot calipers. i'll get pics tomorrow. there is a bit of info on fitting the volvo brakes to toyota struts around the internet.
im not sure what rotors i have, considering the calipers bolt onto the standard struts and fit under 14" watanabes im guessing the rotor size must be close to stock

What size disc is the BMW caliper using ?

Haha that is the best brake mod I have seen, so so simple. I am now on the hunt for a pair.

i'll find out tomorrow for you. they dont feel heavy and stop quite well. timbo the calipers are from a 1974 bmw 2002, they have 4 bleed nipples, one for each piston, the equivalent volvo 240 girling calipers are what the bmw boys bolt on to replace these calipers and supposedly have a slightly larger brake pad and are cheaper, and have either one or two bleed nipples, either one would be a good purchase, you can find the volvo calipers at many wreckers (i've seen a pair at pick a part just recently, would need a rebuild though)

Yeah, I have been reading up on the Volvo ones as they fit under 13's. My biggest problem is getting an adaptor plate made for them.

First photo looks like a vented rotor.

I'm currently doing a Citroen Xantia 283X22mm vented rotor on RA40 hub/strut (bigger wheel bearing than 86 same/similar stub axle angle on the strut) with FC calipers for my bro's 86. Gotta bore out the centre hole on the rotors and re-drill bolt pattern though. Once the disc is bolted up on the back of the hub, the braket for the caliper should be fairly easy to modify.

For my own track car I will either do the same if I decide I like it or possibly use RA40 struts, custom CNC alloy hubs (hybrid between RA40 and R33 GTS-T) with disc over hub and 5 stud stock replacement R33 GTS-T brakes 296X30 vented. Flat 10mm thick alloy caliper bracket will determine where the outer part of the hub needs to be machined in relation to the stock RA40 wheel bearings. Stud pattern then becomes 5X114.3 so a hilux diff in the rear will match that up nicely and 5X114.3 rims are plentiful, saw a 32 GTR set of 16X8's for a grand with semi slicks just recently for example. Looking forward to ditching the XT130 solids after cooking the pads at the track in december just gone.

There's quite a few 2002 calipers on car-part.com for quite cheap. I doubt most of them guys would send internationally but sending them here through comgateway or the like would be easy enough if you wanted to do it.

stalhz, you got a pic? I been meaning to use the RA40 struts I bought years ago but haven't decided on what to do with caliper/disc combo.

Can you run ma61 wheels on the rx7 fc front brake upgrade? And does anyone have the adaptor plates for this conversion?

Not without spacers, AJPS does a caliper bracket to suit the AE86 strut with a Civic disc. I think 8mm spacers are needed.

Got this done a couple months back. Works insane, going with the same for my SR rolla for now.

Oh okay. Are you running the civic disks? Is there any other disk you can run with those adaptor plates?

that is awesome..any chance you figured out what disc rotors you are using?

Nah, my brother bought the brackets and disks from AJPS but we dummy fitted it on the bench and it didn't clear the 14" Watanabe's or MA61's unless using a spacer, so we decided to do our own setup with RA40 struts (bigger stub axles and bearings, similar style removable caliper like AE86). We did that working on the theory that if we need to go 15's to clear calipers we may as well upgrade rotor diameter as well (so went to the stronger strut too). Using 283mm Citroen Xantia disks with the FC calipers. I don't like his wheels a whole heap so when I do the same setup on my AE71 soon I will check if something cheap like Rota RB's (15X7 +4) or Konig Rewinds (15X7 0) will clear. The AJPS brackets would have been designed specifically for the Civic rotor, because when you design a bracket you need to have chosen the rotor first.

How big does the spacers need to be to fit ma61 wheels with rx7 front brake upgrade.

stahlz_ae86

I think 8mm with the AJPS kit, as mentioned earlier.

I'll try remember to put some photo's up later on. I manual machined them out of steel on the lathe then cut the excess material off with a grinder (tools which were available to me at the time). I have drawn it up on CAD to nearly the final drawing so I may do a group buy soon if there's enough people keen. Will have them CNC cut. Pics soon.

Ugly but they work, had to put a fat 4mm wurth washer between the bracket and the caliper but that has been rectified in the cad drawing if CNC goes ahead it will be one piece alloy bracket. I'm about to manual machine a pair for my track car in the lathe out of 6061 alloy plate.
