Well finally getting around to a build thread after owning my 84 Zenki ae86 for 2yrs now.

It's an import but basically the same as ADM in all honesty.

I was a noob when I first bought it and paid way too much for what it was, but I was impatient and wanted a imported one. Was looking at a couple Tim.Duncan's old silver gze, and a later panda Levin.

In retrospect I should've opted for timmy d's but was not keen on a few minor things and being inexperienced I wanted a N/A car.
(any one know of this car and its whereabouts?)

When first aquired

Shortley after

25816

25817

25819

Then I drove into a fence whilst being a Dick. Damage is not bad but dented the Rad support and chassis support.

25820

25821

25822

I covered up the damage with a new bumper (zip tied on as one mount was bent)and removed the bonnet latch to put in bonnet pins so the bent bonnet would sit more flush.
Couple of months later I got a major defect
-too much play in seats
-modfied suspension
-steering wheel
-low tread on tires
* note cop didn't look twice at the damage
So it wasn't going to pass with the damage so stripped it. And has sat dormant in my shed for the past 9 or more months

The engine is coming out over the weekend so fairly soon I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and make my mind up on what I'm going to do with it.

Restore it to something I can get registered but as a track oriented car...so pour big $$$ into.

Dump the parts into it that I've bought and track it.

Or find a registered JDM shell.

So far the parts I have are

7age.
full stainless Janspeed exhaust system.
Pair of Velo GP90s will have to get it regod as a 2 seater.

...the joys of living in SA. Not!!!

Only put one thermo fan on I thought 2 would be overkill.

McLEVIN

No I keep spending money on parts. Rather than getting it fixed. Probably be in the new year.
I've got shockworks coilovers and jdi steering arms on their way soon.

Slimer86
26th November 2012, 01:47 PM
Less buying, more building = more driving!

Put it together, and replace what needs to be replaced once you have identified it.

Else, you'll keep whording parts for it, lose interest, and sell it.
It definately won't be the first time this has happened.
If you need a hand, gimme a shout.
Cheers,

McLEVIN

Yeah I wouldn't stress, I can't even see it being an issue if they did notice it, not like your adding bars and braces, just welding the factory seams, they are spot welded from factory anyways, so a little mig/tig weld isn't going to be an issue in my eyes

not sure exactly what you mean, are you referring to where the cage mounts? i wanted a bolt in cage and it needed to 150mm back from the drivers head to be road legal so the boxes are just something level to mount the cage too...it's on both sides. the 2 blue sections are linking the 2 chassis rails.

drift kid
28th August 2014, 06:25 AM
Yeah I thought that mightve been the case, I have been looking at this part of my car and wondering why the rail is so weak and underengineered in this section, i think that I might do the same as you

McLEVIN
28th August 2014, 09:40 AM
Here is a vid of where I saw it done. http://youtu.be/vqWDjAWxvKI
I spoke also spoke to an engineer and he had done the same thing. He said he used 30mm steel unlike the vid. So I did the same. Doesn't look as nice, but im not fussed how it looks as it would be covered.

Im sure what ever you do will look mint.

Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk
There is a vid on YouTube that explains it in greater detail than i can.
Essentially it privides even mounting points for the crossmember to be mounted to the body allowing for correct geometry..

Not sure on the actual performance of them in the real world, but theory looks good.

drift kid
11th February 2017, 11:54 AM
I just had a watch, it's a good idea in theory, but will only work well if all of the holes in the body are in exactly the same position as the holes in the crossmember. Good idea but seems a little unnecessary

Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

McLEVIN
11th February 2017, 12:32 PM
Yeah i also dont know what difference it would make between a true subframe where the mounting points are further apart as in square like in the vid, compared to the ae86s crossmember where they are very narrow.

Wow, great attention to detail mate

I replaced the foam on my fan box at one point and was disappointed by the adhesive on the foam... Was ok for like a week, then it came off and jammed up the fan. Keep an eye/ear out maybe

Installed rear seats and Levin sun shades New parts installed; interior light, fuel door/hatch lever, speedo cable, heater control unit and cables. AC is now completely removed.

The latch is not ae86 specific and sat on an angle and too close to the floor so we redrilled the hole and inserted a rivnut to fit better.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180616/f92e4d5913c9270ddb93748b06c613dc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180616/78bd27e810b8301ee89726a20badf1af.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180616/0550c8c83ae7d326af81535baa22ee0a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180616/fe4a585927c085123f04bb4f41756325.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180616/5bbebcd0533d83f234241867714770d8.jpg
