Hey all,

I did use the search function couldn't find anything really relevant to what i wanted....

Well i have an 1983 adm ae86 with a stock 16v big port, and to cut to the chase its to slow (used to own a s13 with sr20). I want to get at least 150hp at the wheels. Was wondering what would be the cheapest way to go would be i know it won't be "cheap" don't want to spend more than $3000 all up.

I guess there is 3 ways
1. to modify the N/A 16v
2. get a 4agze half cut
3. turbo the 16v (would most likely cost more then 3k after forgies, ecu, tune, turbo, manifold, exhaust, ect.)

Was just wondering what other people opinions are and what they have tried or have seen. Haven't had any experience with 4age engines or know what they are capable of doing.

At the moment I'm leaning towards a 4agze half cut would probably get me around 140hp atw and maybe a good ecu and tune to get around 170atw?

any input appreciated, thanks

The cheapest and easiest way is to turbo the 4agze. Getting that sort of power out of an N/A 4age is expensive... very expensive, also not as reliable

Thanks for replies, looks like ill just buy a gze half cut. $2200 seems like an alright deal on the ae101 4agze half cut

this is my opinion

if your not happy with "how fast" the 86 is with a 4age maybe you should just buy a nissan

WHY?

4agze are great! i had one and loved it but you WILL bang the t50 box and the diff... by the time you have upgraded them you could have bought a decent s14

if you want the 86 to feel quicker stick a better ratio in the rear

dont forget driving a slow car fast is more fun than driving a fast car slow

I have heard of people with RWD 4AGZ(T)E's using a W58 gearbox or something similar to handle the extra power and torque.

The AE86 and S13 are completely different cars, the AE86 prides itself on being very light, it may not be the fastest in a straight line until you pour a lot of money into the engine, but it's handling and response are its strong points. The S13 is light too, thought I don't think it is as nimble as the AE86, has more power though, but not quite as free revving. If you just want a car with a higher rwhp figure, you may as well get back into a SR20DET powered car or a 7MGTE/1JZGTE/2jZGTE powered car.

easiest/cheapest/best is just to go a 4AGZE

a good example of this is mereki's ke70 (look in members rides) - it's all kind of awesome. so fast, and relatively "simple" in comparison to everything else

4age+T

turbo and aftermarket ECU will be under $3k.

blacktop 20v with pon cams from tomie should be able to do it .......... just saying by the time you sell off the 16v your budget should be able to support the extra for the BT

4agze or turbo'd, I had a turbo'd 20v with t50 and t series welded diff and I only blew one gearbox from being stupid it all comes down to how you drive wether the boxes and diffs last or not, I did it very cheap and got 175rwhp, look for a 2nd hand 4agze for about $1000, cheap ebay manifold $160, s15 turbo $250, 2nd hand ecu $1000 then just do all the stuff yourself, you might crack $3000 but not by much if you look in the right places.

Other option as much as I hate the idea, put a ca or an sr in it if your nissan inclined, you can pick up a cheap ca18 with box and turbo set up, mounts can be sourced for around $300 and through that in, honesty think it would be cheaper due to the amount people want for 4age's these days.

Or just look for someone who's wrecking a already turbo'd car and just buy that.
