View Full Version : Tailshaft issue..

Hey so I had my car on a hoist today and noticed the tail shaft is on a ugly angle, which would explain the crazy gay vibrations I'm getting.

car is ke70 with 4age - T50 - jdm ae86 tail shaft - t series, the usual can of beans!

Now, the front half of the shaft is the problem. Where the shaft goes into the gearbox, its lower than the center bearing, so it's on a pretty bad angle..

Now I can always make a few spacers to space the tailshaft down at the center bearing to get it parallel. Now I've searched abit and I found no one with this hik up. Have I missed something causing the bad angle? Or is it just simply spacing it down till the angle is correct and off I go..
im also using a ae86 geabox x member which I don't like as only one bolt lines up either side. Will using a ae71 x member help the issue??

any input will MADDD

All Uni's are good?
Most unmolested Ke/Ae I have seen have a small spacer ~2-3mm on each side of centre bearing mount from stock..
What sort of distance does it need to come down?

Not sure about the AE86 gearbox xmember, could be your issue.

SamQ T50 gearbox spacer? Its like 10mm spacer that fit between gearbox mount and xmember, might do the trick.

EDIT: I don't see them on SQEngineering site anymore, but he used to make them.
SQ Engineering T50 G/box spacer, tilts engine so the quads don't foul on clutch master cyl.

Yeah I bought a new x member from "jordo" hopefully that will bring it down the right height. All unis seem fine ill just have to wait till I put the new x member in.

Hey adds, do you think you could take photos of the gearbox showing the angle of the tailshaft before and after you change the cross member?

I have the same setup in my car (KE + T50 + AE86 cross member) and would just like to see if it looks the same as yours.
Also let us know if it fixes the vibration.

I haven't driven my car yet so don't know if it has a vibration problem, but if one might be caused by the angle I might as well get it right from the start while I am putting it all together.

Cheers
Rob

yeah no probs, I should get my ae71 cross member tomorrow, so ill throw some pics up here.
When i had it on the hoist it was very obvious the angle was wrong, so if yours looks like its has a agnle id just change it out. I think some ppl have used the ae86 one but i dont know if they have had any problems or not.

Will update this soon.

Just converted my auto ae71 to man t50 (ae71 crossmember), then borgy to t series with no issues (jdm ae86 tailshaft).

Used the AE71 gbox crossmemeber, becaused I once used the ae71 gbox crossmember in an ae86 and the gbox/shaft would rub against the tranny tunnel.
Once the ae86 crossmember was in the gbox was stright and never had issues after.

I bought a 71 cross member to mount my w box in an ae86 and there were rubber isolators between the chassis and mount.
-have you got these rubber spacers / isolators?
Spaces the member down about 20mm

So problem has been fixed, sure enough it was the 86 x member. Its hard to seen in the pics but the first one you can see how they angle down, and the second pic with the ae71 x member it is pretty much straight.http://imageshack.us/a/img841/1719/photo2umm.jpg

Thanks for that! Mine is sitting at about the same angle as the first pic there (not surprising given I'm using and ae86 cross member)

Did you notice any improvement in the vibration issue?
