Hey guys just another question about my dirty Nissan motor haha.
Since the weather has started cooling down so has the water temp its been running at about 55-60 degrees on cold mornings and I don't know if its in my head but I feel it's chewing through more fuel. Is this a bad thing for it to run like this ?
Usually it's runs at about 70-75 even on hot days
Should a take the clutch fan out and put something in front of my radiator to get a bit more temp into it ?
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers Sam

Normal opp temp for the Sr is 83'c from memory.
I had mine on the freeway fans off at it sat at 80'c.
Do you have any of the following ?
- Hi flow thermostat
- thick alloy radiator
- cheep water temp gauge
- under drive water pump pulley?

I only have a thick alloy radiator out of your list. Could my thermostat be playing up ?

Mine also sits at 70 on the highway.
The hottest I've had it was at 85 on the track

Thermostats usually stick shut not open, but you could check it.
Mine gets up to 90 - 95 on the track.
Everything in my cooling system is factory standard.
Have you tried a different gauge?

I might check the thermostat.
And I haven't tried another gauge its a new vdo gauge with vdo sender.

Meh. Lately mines been sitting at idle around 70. But yes, you will be using more fuel when the engine is running colder, the computer adds fuel when it's cold.

^^ Yeah, as Matt said, when you engine is running colder, it will be feeding in more fuel. Therefore, increased fuel comsumption.....
I would check the thermostat function....

Yeah, way too cold. Tolerances would be out and be the tiniest bit down on power. Maybe more wear on parts too. Probably makes fuck all difference at 200hp but v8 at 400hp pick up like 8hp by running it between 70 and 88.

Yeh that's pretty cold, ecu will be thinking 'choke' effectively!!! My thermostat stuck open some time ago. Odd thing to happen but it did. I'd say its your thermostat. No matter how big your radiator is within reason, your thermostat should keep the temp at whatever it's rated to SR's are 83 I think??!? My old man has a three core radiator in a mk1 rs2000 escort and that sits on 85 all day

Thanks, I appreciate the help guys ill start by getting a new thermostat. I probably won't be able to get one over the long weekend so I might just put something in front of the radiator to block half the air flow and hopefully that will help a little bit.

Sounds to me like you're having trouble with statics, as in you're not doing enough of them. I'd get on the brake and see if that helps.

Also are you running an oil cooler?
If so you might wanna remove it for winter.
Especially in your neck of the woods.

Has it always done this? The may not even be a thermostat in the housing?
