So I'm looking at buying this 86. I'd show you pics but the ones the guy sent me don't really do the car justice (not in a good way) it's a white ADM levin it's got a fair bit of rust that's been filled with bog and been painted over and it looks pretty shit. It's got a dent in the door no carpet and absolutely no rear interior it's also missing some dash pieces and has 2 base model r34 seats. Grille and body is all stock except for a ducktail. It's got a 4age 16v conversion and a locked s series diff with drum brakes and stock rear springs. On the front it has coilovers but unsure of the brand and jdm disc brakes. He wants 6k. So what do I offer? My mate reckons 2500 to 3500 sorry about the length of the info

$2500 isn't far off, not really worth anything if you want to drive it on the road though.

If its running it'd be worth $2500 - $3000 to pilfer the running gear from, but by the sounds of it the bodywork is shot. To give you an idea I paid less than $10k for mine with zero rust, 4age w/ Microtech, 2 way TRD LSD and a fully intact interior. I have seen JDM notchbacks in NSW for around $10k - $12k.

Bodywork is expensive to do properly. If you just want a drift pig thrasher to use on the track and can weld up the bits and pieces in the body it might not be a bad thing. If you want a nice streetable car you could do a hell of a lot better for that sort of money - all the interior bits get expensive real fast

^Don't use your car as an example! I reckon that was a steal considering prices these days

Well I'd be using it for the occasional cruise and for a monthly run on the track as I already have a daily. I'm looking at it this Saturday so ill post pics up then. I'd only be putting a rear seat in and something to cover the boot floor so how much would that cost me? Also I'd need the heater controls, the left speaker cover, the plastic for under the steering wheel and the rubber that covers the gear stick. So what would all that cost me?

Thanks heaps guys

Cheers McBen - I was starting to get worried I'd paid too much....

Nick, have a look on eBay, there is someone selling the bits and pieces you are after on their, albeit for a JDM model. That will at least give you an idea of what stuff is worth.

The biggest concern really is the rust - if it is bad in the body work and has been bodged over with filler it could be hiding a lot more sins. Get right underneath it and see where else it is rusted, has it had any big hits. A cosmetic body resto (rust repair and paint) could easily eat $5k, and you can add a lot more for any structural welding that is required. I am quoting the going rate here of course, not mates rates.

This would be a very silly car for you to purchase.

If you are seriously considering that the "the heater controls, the left speaker cover, the plastic for under the steering wheel and the rubber that covers the gear stick" as things that need attention, but it is covered in horrible rust PATCH UPS - BOG IS NOT A RUST REPAIR!!

then you are in for a long ride my friend :)

Sounds like a parts donor car, not a driver. As such the only way to realise its full value (which might be close to 4 grand, not 6, from the info stated) is to part it out. You cant expect someone who is going to consume the space and spend the time and money towing and stripping it to pay dollar for dollar what the car is worth to part.

Offer 1500, see if he starts to negotiate his price. If he doesn't, slap him a high five and walk away. Do this in person. Don't overpay for a shit old car.

2-3k if you mates who are happy to I to town on the bodywork for relatively cheap. An if the running gear is fine. I'd assume that the suspension is fucked and leaking everywhere.

The interior and stuff looks fine to me - but as everyone has stated, the rust is the killer here. That is what will soak up all your money in getting it to a decent standard

Don't buy it unless you want to learn about rust repair and how shit copious amounts of bog can be
