Currently deciding on a front suspension setup for my KE70. The car will be built for street sprints etc so will need to be mod plated / registered. At this stage I'm leaning towards TRD race springs and KYB AGX shocks (with spacers) in XT130 struts. The other option is obviously to have a set of coilovers built using a kit like T3. Will aftermarket camber plates work with the standard top hats? Aside from more camber adjustment and being able to change spring preload, what would I gain by going for coilovers?

I tend to think if you have to ask you don't need them, but in seriousness,

Pros:
- Can set corner weights precisely
- Easier to change spring lengths and rates
- More wheel clearance
- More sikness

Cons:
- Price??
- Not really much

If you are going to use an XT130 strut and standard perches you'll need a custom wound spring. The XT struts have a big lower perch, and the upper hat is smaller on the AE86, so you need a spring with a big bottom and small top. I had a set done at Browns Springs in Melbourne, but I'm sure someone local could make you a set if you don't go coilover.

lighter weight
more wheel clearance
different spring rates available off the shelf/cheaper
height adjustment/ corner weighting
more camber (as the std spring seat will foul when the tops are maxed)
strut will have height removed from the tube so they will be properly short stroked and captive at full droop

I can help you with set up advice and coilovers or with springs and shocks

pm me or look at ajps.com.au

Adjustments.
Speak to shockworks or ajps for a quality setup

To be honest coilovers are worth the extra $$ for the right ones...

In terms of suspension you do get what you pay for. You could be happy driving the arse off a relatively unsettled car because that is all you know. The best advice i have been given is speak to the one person about the car setup, don't buy springs from one guy, shocks from another and sway bars etc from another. Stick with the same supplier for everything suspension related.

You asked about front only, but getting the back right is just as important too.

The ajps springs will shit all over the TRD ones.

Shockworks coilovers are the best you can buy.

Bang for buck the KYB's are good.

If you want T3 stuff, sundee can help you out too

Iam curious Matt into why you say "The ajps springs will shit all over the TRD ones. "

They are springs. As long as rates are right and no faults, why would they vary?

???????

its funny, when i used to sell TRD springs, we rate tested about 4 pairs and they were all more than 1kg.mm off which is substantial

and there is a bit of talk about it on club 4ag and other forums,

hence why my springs are becoming more popular in the USA now - batch rate tested to ensure uniformity

apart from being available in more rates and height

So you can corner weight the car, last week I set up 2 Hyundai Excel cup cars, both had coilovers front and rear, they were all over the shop with regards weights on each corner, after tweaking both on the scales had both cars 65% front and 35% rear with exactly 50% left to right with driver in car. A difference of 50kgs across the front will be VERY noticable under braking, with equal weighting the car will also turn left to right the same.
