3.9 hates life on turn 1,2,3 and 6 unless you have a 9000rpm 150hp 4a lol.

Hopefully see you out there some time

29th October 2013, 11:58 PM
lol I just enter 3 and 6 in 3rd then when it runs out of puff drop to 2nd and it sits at around 7k the whole way round. maybe couple clutch kicks but just for the noise really haha

not manly enough to do 1 and 2 in the dry yet haha

Zane k
30th October 2013, 12:03 AM
Haha yeah can't wait to get out on the track, If anyone knows of a t-series diff and/or a 4.8 t-series diff center should let me know ;)

30th October 2013, 12:14 AM
Haha rad i remember my 3.9 days.

With 4.8, can stay in 3rd for whole of 3 and 6 (with revs to spare). turn 2 is kinda doable in 4th! will never get around the whole way in 3rd with 3.9

Can simply not get enough run up into turn 1 from the end of pit wall lol.

Just got booked in for Fabulous Fabrications to come out and make me a full 2.5' stainless exhaust with a small muffler and a resonator. Also not happy with the G4 coilovers so will be ordering some Bc Golds for the front.

Got real close to rego then had all sorts of fucked up noises and a shit load of oil coming from the 16v so pulled the rocker covers off and had a look at the Cams and caps and found this. Will have the engine out this weekend, getting it sent off for a rebuild, new cams, maybe bore it out a little, new water pump oil pump etc etc.. Also fitted my equips, guards need a bit of a pump and slightly smaller tyres oh and fucked my exhaust trying to get out of my driveway on the weekend haha.

Motor is out, not %100 sure on what I’m gonna do at the moment, may get the 16v sorted out but I’m going to have a look at a 20v this weekend so that could be a possibility soon.

Zane k
6th April 2014, 03:43 PM
So ended up getting a 20v.
Came with ITB’s and Velocity Stacks, Brand new never opened Kelford Cams and Valve springs, hks timing belt, duel row pulley, 1zz coils modified and bolted onto SamQ adapter plate, SamQ ITQ air filter adapter plate, ITG air filter, SamQ dizzy cap, SamQ water kit with internal thermostat and sensor, he threw in a JDM T50 G box (unsure of condition) and tailshaft, along with a Bosch External fuel pump and swirl port surge tank and a box of random 20v parts.

As far as I’m aware these are the biggest cams I can go before I need to start modifying pistons and what not, pretty sure I just need to get a TRD .8mm TRD Head gasket.

Plans are to send the motor off and get cams and springs installed and maybe a freshen up, paint the engine bay, not sure what colour yet, might go with black again or white, then get rid of the razorback and get a standalone edu, thinking either Adaptronic or Haltech and get some extractors, not sure on which ones to go with though, was thinking maybe TRD Copies? Anyone have any opinions on extractor and edu choice? Thanks!

Visited my engine builder today, arrived to see this, new pistons/rods and head is all ported and cleaned, decided to go oversized vales and Toda oil pump gears, will have redline somewhere around the 9000-9500 range. Block is being honed at the moment and all should be going back together in the net few weeks, just waiting on head studs and adjustable pulleys.

Also got bored and decided to polish the wiper motor and heat tap and clean up the booster. Pretty stocked with how things are coming along.

If the valves haven't been purchased nor machine work done...don't do it...keep standard size...

Zane k
19th June 2014, 09:27 PM
Already done man, why would you suggest keeping standard though?

Delazy
19th June 2014, 10:55 PM
You gain absolutely nothing by using bigger valves in a 20v head due to the combustion chamber and 5v arrangement..Ferrera did testing on the characteristics/flow of the supertech 1mm valves and felt they were worse than standard oem ones..custom ultra exclusive valves are available in oem size but reshaped that increase flow by close to 20% I believe it was...

I have 1mm oversize supertech in my yet to run motor and it's one of the many things I actually regret doing..

Jimmee1990
20th June 2014, 05:09 PM
I find that interesting John, as when my old man was working at Speedworks they did a few O/S valve AE101 and AE111 cylinder heads and they all flowed significantly higher than heads with standard size valves. This was on heads with a fairly significant amount of port work done as well however, so I'm not sure how that would compare with Ferrea's test.

Also those pistons and rods are awesome, it should rev like crazy.

I would be interested in seeing photos of the finished ports if you can Zane, and if they provided you with any before and after flow figures? Just out of curiosity.

ill correct myself...the issue was mostly with big lift cams and the 1mm OS valves causing shrouding... (i have 288/10mm kelfords)

So the final bits of my engine showed up. Arp head studs, Fidanza Adj Cam gears, new hydrologic belt tensioner and timing belt tensioner just making the finishing touches to the engine then putting it back together.
Shouldn't be long now till the motor is back and in the corolla.

Delazy

Make sure the cam gears are good and tight..I've seen a few cases where the fidanza ones have slipped out of adjustment and caused havoc..

don't bother using the standard belt tensioner either, get a manual one from samQ (I think he is making them) or MRP..again will save you having a destroyed head when the tensioner decides to fail

So I’ve basically come to a stand still until I get my motor back which shouldn’t be to far away, then just need to find someone to tune/wire it up, tossing up between P.I.T.S and Top Rpm, if anyone could recommend someone feel free to do so. (y)
Messed around with my dash which I’m pretty happy with and slowly putting the car back together getting most things painted/cleaned before going back in.

Whole point of the build is a reliable n/a that I can belt the shit out of, will definitely be skidded, kinda planning on binning it so i can reshell into an 86 notch ;)

Anyway haven't gotten much done in this lately other then just little shit like mounting both my velo's but I did get some headers made up, not quite finished, still needs to be ceramic coated and what not.
Now time to get some other fab work done, catch can, overflow, probably go with a custom plenum as I'm ditching the idea of open stacks and mabey a half cage.

Cheers dude, don't love the idea of running trumpet socks and they seem to be quite restrictive/ still lets small amounts of dust and shit into the engine, I like the look of a nice shiny plenum and Ill be going boosted eventually anyway so might as well do it now. :)

Properly oiled socks are great man, but your call, if your going turbo anyways it's not a bad idea then

Jimmee1990

The socks can work okay, but you will definitely get more power out of a properly made plenum with stacks inside and a massive filter down the front.

Yeah would have loved to run the big 130mm stacks I've got but the plenum just works out to be more practical and better performance.

101 did a nice job on the fuel system and wiring in the engine. Got it home, did a drive way skit, blew diff (probably didn't help that the diff oil was basically muddy water) aaaand back on stands it goes haha. Got another borgy for the time being until I find a decent T-series, Just need to clean up the body harness, put new diff in (weld it) get a bash plate made up, and wire in my gauges, hopefully make 4th Friday night drifts for a bit of a shake down.
