I’ve left it as a bit of a sleeper in the true sense of the word. It just looks like an old car owned by an old person and gets no second glances. It is running a 7K with twin Solex sidedraft carbs backed by a K40 4 speed. It’s a pretty quick car, easily keeping up with standard 4AGE cars. My plan was to keep driving it as a sleeper until a nice KE35 shell came up and swap the drivetrain over, but I picked up another car since and being on the beach, sitting means rusting.

It’s a quick reliable car that I drove 50km a day to work Mon-Fri year round with no issues.

Engine/drivetrain
Engine was installed by myself and friends in November 2012 and has done under 20000kms since, with fluid changes every 5000km. Solex carbs run great; noticeable power increase without the filter socks, but I live next to the beach, so I never ran without them. Carbs have stayed in tune with only a minor balance needed after 18 months. The 7K is about torque more than revs, and it pulls in 3rd gear like a KE70 would pull in 2nd.
Electronic distributor and coil in good condition.
The radiator is started to weep at the seams a year ago and I soldered it up, but it is starting to weep again. I just add a cup of coolant to the overflow tank every few weeks. It normally runs at a steady 80*c. Even in 42*c heat and traffic, water temp stayed under 90*c. Long spirited uphill runs (think Greenhill Rd/Mt Lofty) had the temp up to 95*c on a warm night, but that was the highest I ever saw it.
I fitted an Exeddy heavy duty clutch a year ago as the stock 4K clutch started slipping.
K40 4 speed is in good condition and shifts well with no crunches or slipping out of gear. I put in new oil when I replaced the clutch and there were no signs of damage in the old oil.
The diff is fine with no whining, although the left axle seal is leaking a little, but only enough to have had to add about a shotglass of oil after a year.
Exhaust is comprised of extractors into a 2in(?) system with one resonator and a standard looking box type rear muffler. Good not but not too loud. Park it on a main street and you can’t hear it idling over traffic noise.
The only oil leak is from the sump gasket, but even that is only a drop every week or so. The rest of the motor is dry from leaks.

Body
Body is in average condition.
I wouldn’t say it’s rough, but it’s an old car and it shows. The [original] paint is faded and peeling in places. Where it is peeling though; it’s separating from the primer, so the primer seems to still be sticking to the car.
There is rust in the usual places, but mostly superficial and no finger holes.
The left rear quarter was hit and knocked back out by the previous owner. It’s crinkled, but it’s all metal and hasn’t been bogged.
Bonnet and fenders have holes from previous fender mirrors and bonnet pins. Holes are covered with duct tape that matches the faded paint.

Interior
Standard interior with sheepskin seat covers. I grafted a tacho into the cluster where the clock would normally be and added Speco electric gauges (water temp, oil pressure and volts, all properly relayed in) under the console with matching green lighting. Anyone that didn’t know would probably just think it was a factory sports option. Stock steering wheel. Headliner is lino flooring tile. CD player with equalizer from the 90’s.

Suspension
Short front springs with KE70 struts and brakes and 50mm lowering blocks in the rear.
Just replaced the strut tops and put in new rear shocks about a month ago.

Wheels
Wheels are standard 13in steelies with Datsun 1600 hubcaps which have been polished. Tyres are retreads with 95% tread that came with the wheels as I was after a sleeper look.
