I thought I had pics or a thread about this from a long time ago but apparently not.

You can go JDM air box but from memory you'll have to move or relocate the washer bottle and radiator overflow. Craig from Just JDM Imports has some atm from memory. Some information about what others have done is at http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/showthread.php/568-Airbox-in-AE86

Personally I had a pod filter put on when the engine was converted to a 4AGE. Be aware you will need to secure it to be roadworthy and not get defected, I just used a piece of metal to secure it to the body.

Hope this helps!

K&N Apollo? Mounts a pod in an enclosed housing which you can channel air to.

Depends how legal you want it, if you want it super neat and nit get picked on by any police then a jdm airbox would be perfect, otherwise a nice stainless inlet tube with a decent pod filter on the end would work great too

The Barra model Fords are meant to have something like a pod filter inside a plastic housing that's meant to flow awesome. Other than that I suggest walking through a self serve wrecker with a tape measure and a drawing in hand.

These are in a ke70 engine bay. Pretty sure ke70 and ae86 bays are very similar.

Yes they do but more came out with the rectangle airbox instead of the "bucket" that you mention.

As a side note the ef-au rectangle airbox is smaller then the ba one. Its not as tall.
