View Full Version : Steering rack rebuild?

I'm swapping to an AE71 crossmember and fitting new tie rods and rack ends to my KE70. When I pulled the rack boots off some nasty looking brown sludge leaked out on both sides. The shaft inside the rack also looks to be slightly pitted / rusty so I assume I'm looking at a rebuild. What's involved with this? What parts will I need and where's the best place to get them?

A "rebuild" on a rack is usually just new bushes and spacers. I don't know if there is much you can do if your shaft if bad other than a full re-machine with custom bushes which you would not want to do.

Quaife? Probably a bit pricey for this project.

This is what it looks like:3211532116
Might still be serviceable? Are bushes available aftermarket?

Very easy to rebuild, get workshop manual to get preload specs, I have a few special tools to make it a bit easier, have done a heap over the years, mainly with quaife stuff fitted, can do it in no time.

Had a search and managed to find the guy here:

Looks like 320 delivered if I buy one or 260 delivered if three people buy at once. Seems like a pretty good deal? Can't imagine a DIY rebuild would be that much cheaper?

They are a nice bit of gear.. I was going to do a Quaife rack, but then opted for one of them!

^^ $10-$15 postage and you are sorted.. I arranged with 2 others to buy 3 and send onto them.. No reason you can't do the same.. We paid the bloke directly in separate transactions, he shipped to me and the other guys paid me post.. Easy
