My LN4* hilux diff ratio is 4.875 (R=39, P=8). however i need to change it to 3.91. Now, i have checked on toyodiy.com and most hilux(es) that came with a 3.9 diff had Ring gear=39 teeth, Pinion=10 teeth.

Should i just look for another hilux Pinion with 10 teeth and swap it into my diff without changing the Crown ring sisnce it already has the 39 teeth?

no, get new ring gear and pinion.

old ones are worn together.

They are matched sets from the day they are made, nobody ever sells just the crown wheel new or just the pinion. The only people selling them separate are ebay scammers that want to rip off kids that don't know the difference.

Diff gears are surprisingly complex, even though they are quite simple on the surface. Each gear is stamped with markings which let the person know who is setting it up what is required.

But yeah as the others have said, crown wheel and pinion are a pair and really can't be separated as they wear evenly together.

been to the wreckers today trying to find a 3.91 hilux diff (crown and pinion set) but no luck yet. Will try again 2moro. Otherwise i might have to buy a new set (expensive) :S

thanks everyone.

Hilux has a few different diff sizes so be careful and check the build plate to make sure if its G E or T series. Plus a front diff will spin the other way so dont get caught out with those.

it's relatively more expensive ofcos...

i'm actually changing my mind about the 3.9 ratio. i'm thinking that a 3.54 ratio would be perfect for a W55 on a 1uz instead. i hope 3.54 ring and pinion gears are more common.

i'll head out this weekend on a new search...:oh:
