just had a rebuild on my 4agte and was wondering what was a good break in procedure? as not really sure and dont want to eff up my engine, some people say to drive it hard after the first 10kms or so but scared might ruin the rings.
also what type of oil should i run while breaking it in and when to change oil and filter?

This is definitely a topic that will have conflicting 'opinions'.
I'm going to leave this link here, it's worth a read.

As for OP, I've never ran in an engine personally, but I was directed to this article by my tuner when I asked him about it (as my car would have to be ran in on a dyno).

Agree with the comments above, everyone has an opinion and the quickest way to start an argument is to ask this question.
Me personally, I load the engine up but just don't rev the crap out of it. Couple of steep hills to hold in a lowish gear (3500rpm or so) whilst going down and the same whilst going up.
Ideally, the most important thing to do is start the engine up, let it get up to temp and check for leaks prior to taking it for a drive. I'd also be checking a/f ratios as well being gte and a custom tune.

I can only help with hearsay and unconfirmed rumours. But can confirm that the only more controversial topics are:
- Which brand of oil should I use?
- Does a 4AGE into AE86/AE71 need to be engineered?

Hahahaha! Agreed.
The most important thing with running the engine is to maintain load on the piston rings so they bed in properly. However you choose to do that is up to you. A general consensus though is to vary the rpm you do it at ie don't hold 3k rpm while cruising down the highway for 20 minutes. Vary the gears and loads. Plenty of engine braking as well.
Use proper run in oil as well for the first few hundred kms. If you're worried about metal, just change the filter/oil after 100kms.
I revved the snot out of my 4agte after it had been on the dyno for 70kms. I'm talking circle work with 8.5k rev limit. I did have low comp/starting problems but that was because I switched to full syn too early (right after the 70kms). Put run in oil back in up to 500kms and then the comp came good. It now makes 250+rwkw and still going strong. Has done 12000kms in the last 2 years.

Heres how i ran in my 22RE turbo:
-Filled with penrite Run in oil, disconnected fuel pump fuse and cranked for 30 seconds to prime everything.
-Started up and immediately checked for oil pressure on the guage (if you have one) checked for and leaks (oil and water)
-drove around the suburbs for 15km or so for 10 minutes so it got warm and kept an eye on all temps and oil pressure while keeping middle to low revs with half load and engine braking through the gears.
-Dumped oil and filter, refilled with Penrite Run in oil again, drove in the hills for another 500kms using up to 3/4 throttle and all through the rev range except right up top. Up and down hills to load it up and engine brake too.
-Dumped oil and filters, filled with Penrite full synth 10w 40 and commenced thrashing!
Its been about 7 Hillclimb events and around 30 very aggressive street outings + burnouts and a 1000km highway round trip and it uses no oil and doesnt smoke at all.
I was told to do this by a Holden mechanic on here (Javal) who has rebuilt many a broken Holden motors in his time.
Worked for me!
