Hi All,

Bit late getting to posting this thread so the first post will be a bit of a catch up.

The AE86 has been (all jokes aside) my favourite car since I first watched Initial D.
I have grown up a bit since then but I have been trying to save for/buy one for the better part of 8 years.

Now being 22 I had the money but importers i had spoken to said i would be looking at 25-30k to import my own.
Luckily i found this beautiful example in November 2015 and snatched it up straight away, I have not looked back.

Enough about me, Here is a picture from when I drove it home from up Newcastle way (I live in Sydney).
I got on the train after work and got to Newcastle around 9pm, I then drove it home and didn't make it home until 12:30am.
Now some of you may ask why it took so long but the weather on this night was torrential and the worst I have ever driven in.
I was doing 80km/h the whole way home, the car was twitching due to the water sitting on the road, the RE002's weren't happy.
I got her home safely and was over the moon when I pulled up at home.

The first thing I did that weekend was clean the car, inside and out. Everything came up really nice.

I did a look over the car and added to the spec list that was on the advertisement, that was a good surprise.
I also went out and bought a StormGuard Car Cover in Medium-Car or 4.25m which fits as if it was custom made!

Next up one of my front lights had a hole in it from a rock, also i figured because the indicators were showing their age and looked matte orange I would wrap them in a very light tint. Makes the hole less noticeable, keeps the water out and looks better. I ran out of time and only did one on each side but I will post more photos once complete. This is why they are all different colours hah.
I know it doesn't look the best but it is only an interim until I can save up for new ones from T3.

Couple of months have passed and I have just been enjoying the car and driving it like it should be. It is my daily for now but I have been on a couple of trips through the National Park and other good driving roads.
I plan on getting to some track days once I sort out a few things.

I bought some colour matched paint to paint the side moulds. I was planning on doing that this long weekend but due to the weather that wont be happening.

I bought all the stuff for another service, Oil, Oil Filter, Plugs, Diff Oil and Gearbox Oil etc so I'll get that done this weekend.

I also have bought Front bearing kits and need to install them as the Front Left Bearing is loose. The wonders of owning a 30 year old car!

TLDR bought an AE86, loving every minute of it and slowly fixing everything that breaks.

p.s sorry about image links this is my first forum thread and it won't let me attach images.

Image links look perfect and tbh it is how most people share images... Uploading pictures has always been a little sketchy between revision upgrades with the forum and we changed the server it was being hosted on recently too so the uploads may be broken again.

Nice trueno you have there enjoy it and I look forward to seeing more updates. I'm pretty sure this car was owned by another forum member a few years back and you might find a build thread on it in here.

Car looks the goods Scott, I'm glad to hear you plan on painting the weatherstrip though!

What product did you use to clean the wheel? It came up really nicely, I might give it a go on the missus' car because here wheel looks a little grotty, I just assumed it was wear on the leather rather than oil and gunk off our hands :S

On the wheel I used some good oil warm soapy water and elbow grease ;)
Yeh I couldn't stand the wheel especially knowing it wasn't my hand gunk!

Whilst servicing the car on the weekend I found some extra goodies as well.
-RCA's
-21mm Front Swaybar
-14mm Rear Swaybar

Does anyone know if the sway bars are stock items or aftermarket?
I couldn't see any markings on them and I'm unsure if they came standard on GT-Apex models and if so what size.

Last Friday I noticed temps rising and some white smoke whilst decelerating.
I found the culprit of the temps on Saturday, the radiator hose was spraying coolant all over the block.
I tightened up the hose clamp and filled up the radiator, took nearly 4 litres so it must have been empty.
It isn't leaking anymore but new hoses have been added to the shopping list just to be careful.

As for the white smoke, there isn't anymore after the service so that's a bonus.

This weekend I'll be getting some help from the Girlfriend's Dad and knocking out the front wheel bearings and the gearbox/diff oils.

Yup, AE86s had front and rear swaybars from the factory. I can't put my hand on my heart and say the rear is definitely a 14mm item, but that sounds about right.

Elbow grease it is!

So the overheating issue is back, albeit no white smoke so that it good I guess.

I checked the radiator and the reservoir bottle and they were empty again!
I can't see where it is leaking from but I'm going to have to fill it up again until then weekend when I can jack up the car and see what the fuck is going on.

Any information or tips on where to check?

Don't suppose the oil has gone to milkshake mode? If you've lost 4 litres in a couple of days it must be a fairly substantial leak... :S

scotty
30th April 2016, 10:39 AM
No milkshake oil so i guess that is a bonus :/

Car is about to be jacked up to have a closer look.

Beautiful day for it in Sydney, hopefully the rain holds out. Sadly my garage is not big enough to work out of.

So my Girlfriends dad's car broke down on the way out to mine from out west so had a closer look myself.

Other than the coolant that is EVERYWHERE, I think i have brought it down to the following.

I think its the radiator cooling fan motor? It sits directly behind the fan, it seems like the further down the more coolant.
From there its getting blown around the bay by the fan because it is everywhere as I said.
I think the gasket is gone. Any ideas from you guys?

OK,That isn't just a cooling fan motor per se, that's the actual water pump that is responsible for pumping the coolant through all the water galleries in the motor and then through the radiator to actually cool it. In RWD applications most companies (well just about all companies in the 80s) also used the water pump to drive a clutch mechanism that powered a fan without trying to overspin it at high RPM.

I haven't worked on a 20 valve for a long time, but you have to remember that they are FWD from the factory, so they wouldn't have a clutch fan attached normally. I personally wouldn't replace just the gasket on a water pump, but would instead replace the pump as well for piece of mind. SamQ sells complete pumps that are already sealed so that you don't have to worry about incorrect fitment of the gasket etc causing further issues. However, as I can't remember the normal process, you'd best ask him if the standard 20v pump is compatible with a clutch fan, or if you'd need to run thermofans instead (electric fans). It's possible that having the clutch fan hanging off the FWD pump caused the issue, but again, please consult the experts like Sam before taking my word for it, because the last time I had a 20v was in 2005! I think I may have ended up with a 16V pump, but again my memory is super sketchy.

SamQ's website lists replacement pump assemblies for around $120: http://www.sq-engineering.com/replacement-parts/engine/4age-20v/lubrication-and-cooling/20v-4age-silvertop-water-pump-complete-assembly.html

Hope I have been of some assistance!

Robbo, you have been awesome thank you!

I will email SQ and see what they think and try and get some better photos, that way i know ill be buying the right stuff.

Sam will definitely be able to help you out, and no worries at all. I couldn't list all the times people on this forum helped me out to save my life! More than happy to give some back, If I was still in Sydney I'd come over and help you swap it out.

I bought a new gasket for now as im a little low on cash this fortnight.
Failing that ill buy a full assembly next fortnight.
The leaking is not as bad as it was I have been topping it up every 2 days with about 2L -_-

On another note, can anyone point me in the right direction for the following issues please.
-No Tacho (bought like this I'm assuming needs to be wired into Haltech properly)
-Speedo is about 10% too fast.
-Heater stopped working a month ago, flicked it on and it died. It hasn't come on since.

ae8zn6
6th May 2016, 06:20 PM
OK, I can help you out again for two of those.

Tacho would need to be re-configured for the later model motor, I did one for a GZE setup once before and its not a hard job if you know how to solder.

I found a picture that specifically talks about the tacho signal for a Haltech setup, its about half way down the page of this link here (click me) (http://www.dorikaze.net/showthread.php?24836-How-to-wire-up-tach)

I'm not really surprised your heater has stopped working. In order to heat the interior there is a small radiator/heat exchanger in the cabin known as the heater core. If you switched the heater on whilst the water level was low the water in your heater core would have made its way into the engine and would not have been properly replaced. That means there is probably an enormous bubble in your heater core at the moment. This may have been why it seemed like the car used more water at one point, if the heater was switched on whilst it was still completely empty some of the water in the cooling system would have gone into re-filling the heater core. Once you have replaced the gasket jack up the front of the car so that the heater core is one of the lowest points in the system, then put the heater on full blast whilst you bleed the system. That should replace all of the coolant in the heater core and get it functioning properly again.

As for the speedo, that will be due to your final ratio in the diff. If that has been changed you will need to get a different speedo gear to correct the reading from the gearbox. Afraid there isn't really a quick fix for that one.

Hope that all helps.

Thanks again Robbo.

Sadly the heater stopped 2 months ago much before the over heating problems. I have a feeling some water got into some wiring somewhere as it happened after a big rain.

Ill have a look into the diagram and try and tackle it, I'm not too bad at soldering.

As for the water pump if the weather in Sydney this weekend is good it'll come out to have the gasket fitted this weekend.

Hmmm, ok, when you say the heater, are you referring the the cabin fans? Because I think they are the only electrical component in the heater system :S

scotty
10th May 2016, 08:59 AM
That'd be it.

My car no longer has aircon but it still has fans/demister. So that is what would not be working.

Apologies, I'm not 100% certain on how the heater/fans work.

haha, no need to apologise, I only know what I know because I have pulled all the dash bits out of a few of these junkers ;)

Alright quick update.

Drove the little shit up to my girlfriends parents house on the 21st of May.

Had it die as I pulled into the driveway, blew a tonne of smoke.
Battery had a bad indicator.
Jump started it and it ran fine, no smoke.
After some brainstorming Rob (girlfriends Dad) and myself came to a conclusion that the water pump was dripping on the alternator shorting it and therefore not charging the battery on the 70km drive.
When I stopped the revs dropped and there was not enough spark to ignite fuel so fuel passed throguh to the exhaust burnt off and blew a shit tonne of smoke. That was our thinking.

Anyways, we worked on it on the 21st and 28th and we got it up and running.
No leak and no overheating.
This was good news.
I have been driving it all week without an issue until last night.

Called NRMA to assist and the starter motor is dead.
So calling all 4age nerds, I'm finding it difficult to find a partnumber for the 20v Silvertop Starter Motor.
Can anyone assist with this please.

scotty
8th June 2016, 01:37 PM
Alright.

Was looking over the car and saw the NRMA guy left the starter unplugged.
I plugged it back in and she roared to life.

Thought it must have been dirty connections or a dodgy relay i have behind the battery.

Took it down to the auto electrician and he replaced the wiring, relay and some connectors.

She's as good a new now, kinda.

Hoping to organise a drive with some guys from Sydney.
Let me know if you want to catch up.

Good to hear its running right now Scotty, you'll find you end up becoming more and more of a mechanic if you own an 80's Corolla long enough ;)

scotty
9th June 2016, 08:26 AM
This one isnt going anywhere and it'll soon be just a weekend car so not as much of a worry!

Thanks for all the help and I'm sure there will be plenty more questions in the future.

30th June 2016, 08:11 AM
Alright yet another problem has arisen -_-

This time its the steering it seems to "stick" in 2 places when turning the wheel.
I think the bearings may have gone in the uni joint.

I'm going to jack up the front and try turning the wheel again to see how it goes without weight on it.

However, I'm thinking I might as well push the manual steering conversion up on my to do list and do it now.
Can anyone advise on how hard this conversion is to do if i find the right parts?
Has anyone on here done it in a daily? I can't imagine it would be that difficult to drive as the car only weighs 900kg give or take some.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Slimer86
30th June 2016, 08:51 AM
Not too heavy on steering when manual steer. Australian delivered were all manual rack.
Steering weight does change considerably when you have a quick rack (slow driving/street/parking) but is in a new level when the speed is increased.

ae8zn6
1st July 2016, 01:51 AM
The steering can be a little heavy in car parks, but once you are moving its not really noticeable at all. You will definitely notice the difference at low speeds though! When I got the white car it felt really weird to be able to move it around the driveway without getting a workout! I wasn't sure I had gotten into an AE86 :S

You have PM

scotty
9th September 2016, 04:51 PM
It's been a while so here is an update.

Steering issue was caused by play in the front left wheel, this was found and fixed during my pink slip.

Coolant leak was fixed and is now a problem again.
I think the screws on the water pump dont hold very well.
I will be buying a sealed unit from SQ and put that in so I dont have to rip it all apart for a 3rd time haha.

All in all enjoying the car so much and learning heaps as I go.
