Hi Guys

I have completed a Blacktop 4AGE conversion into my MK1 Cortina and am very happy with it. However there is quite a strong fuel smell inside the cabin when driving.

I have a Carter black lift pump to a 2L surge tank and a Bosch 044 fuel pump with a return line to the fuel tank. As much as possible I have aluminium fuel lines with rubber hose only for connections.
The car is old but in good condition, i have sealed up as many of the holes in the firewall as I can

Any theories on what might be causing this fuel smell issue?38071

Fuel will slowly go through rubber hose. For EFI you need this spec fuel hose at a minimum: SAE 30 R9, and SAE 30 R10 for anything submersed inside the tank. If you use R6 hose, that is not good enough for EFI supply hose, but will probably be fine for return hose.

The gold standard is PTFE (teflon) covered in wire braid, and AN fittings. Done properly the PTFE shouldn't leak as much smell as a rubber hose.

Or, just seal the boot from the passenger compartment better.

Weren't you having a problem with it emptying the surge tank? is the main tank venting properly?
