I agree paint over in black - strip them with paint stripper first for a better surface for the fresh coat.

depends on what look youre going for. if you want a thrasher look id say just matte black but if you want a cleaner look id go polished.

hey what do you guys reckon is my best process to paint them?
sand them, primer, then paint? never done it before?

The best way would be to use paint stripper and depending on how stubborn / how old the original paint is, it may take one, two or ten coats of stripper to get as much off as you can.
Then take some relatively rough, say 60grit sandpaper (but not too rough as you don't want to scratch the shit out of the metal of the wheels) and work it back. Then go a middle of the range grit sandpaper (say, 300ish) and give it a going over again. I use the 300ish sparingly, as it'll only be effective for the really rough bits, then after that it'll only add to it. Then i usually use something really really fine, like some wet and dry 1000 / 1200 sandpaper to get it spotless. Just a note, 1200 takes ages to make a difference on account of it getting clogged really easily, so you might need quite a few sheets of it. Then if you're pedantic (and depending on how long you leave the metal exposed whilst you work on it / the other wheels, give them a quick lick of that rust removal acid you can pick up from auto shops, just to be on the safe side. I always do when i expose bear metal, it can't hurt although it's not really needed, just a safe bet.
Then get some rattle can primer from bunnings, and layer coats of it on, the colour of it doesn't matter much, i usually go the standard light grey and it's never failed. I also like a think primer (hides any imperfections you couldn't get out with sanding), White Knight from memory is the one i use. Primer layer as in = one layer, let it dry to the touch. Two layers, dry. That's really all you should need, but you can go more if you're not satisfied, three layers will be ample.
Once the layers are dry (won't take long, the beauty of rattle can paint) take your chosen colour (i'm going to assume you're using either rattle can paint, or you've got access to a compressor and a sealed room / enclosed area / garage etc), work the layers up slowly. Do not dump colour on, it will do what's called sagging when it gets really thick and runs, and will look like utter shit. Do as many layers as it takes to get a good, smooth coverage. I used to do graffiti so i know how much paint is enough, but it's not that hard to learn by trail and error. e.g. your first coat should be able to see primer through it. not much, otherwise it's too fine, but you get what i mean by lightly. then build up coats accordingly. Then once it's coated nicely and the primer's hidden, i usually go two - three more coats, just so it's got great coverage and will last ages and be nice and thick.
p.s. you can also invest in a clear coat rattle can, if that's also up your alley, depends on what look you'd like.
Note: where possible, do painting in a sealed environment, like a garage or on the floor of a shed, you get the idea. doesn't have to be mad airtight or anything, just somewhere where wind won't blow shit into the drying paint. It will shit you know end to see dust in dry paint and the only way to fix it is to do the whole above process all over again, a real bitch.
So there you have it mang. Hope that helps! (and your ride is schmick).

man dead set you put alot of effort into that, more people should be like you on here. thumbs up champ.
though what ive noticed is once primered and painted(rattle cans) it gets scratched real easy, its not as tough as a compressor finish. whys that?

What's bogan about it? Since when was anything shiny related to bogans? The chrome lip really sets the rims off.

Ahh thanks brother, but no dramas at all. Hope it helps you somewhat!
Yeah, i have noticed that too. The only thing i can think of is that rattle can paint is never going to be as well applied or as thick / good quality as proper paint applied through a compressor. I would put it down to the paint being a different formula in rattle cans, plus any way you look at it paint being applied through a compressor is going to be of a higher standard. I would also say it depends on the quality of the brand of paint you're using in rattle cans, use something cheap and it'll come off easier...
How are the wheels going mate? Started to hate sanding yet? Ah... sanding. the bane of my existance haha.

exactly what i did with mine. to make them scratch resistant (to a degree) i used like a clear protector coat or some shit. still rattle can. was in the same place i bought the paint.
