im looking to get a tow car the sprinter. and i wanted to know what everyone else has.
also i was looking to get a 4x4 as the tow car (and so i can go 4wd driving) and was looking at the land rover discovery and Jeep cheeroke (spelling) both around 1993-96 models. ive got about $5000 for the car to spend and there both around that price. but all ive read is that both cars are pretty unreliable is this true. or unless someone has an another 4x4 to suggest.

not a 4b but my mates calais is the best car for towing. he had a hilux surf turbo diesel but that was no where near as good as his calais. and that is towing a heavy 32 4 door

I had a 1993 landrover discovery (v8i), motor was torquey, would easily tow, but the build quality was shithouse, electrics were shit house and the gearboxes are weak as piss, plus they are pretty thirsty..
Best car I ever towed a car+trailer with was my old mans 2007 turbo diesel navara, it was effortless and I was overtaking people on the highway at 110...
IMO you would be better off going a nissan patrol, landcruiser or maybe even a hilux...

i tow with a VZ ss ute.. its not the greatest... 23l per 100km and the IRS doesnt help with the towing.. my mate uses his VX sedan and it tows way better..

I tow with a 4Runner (surf) got a 2.8L diesel motor, DTS turbo kit and it goes ok. holds speed. will have to slow for hills tho. Only had it get a little warm once on a fishing trip with the boat on the back 4 guys in the truck with 400Kg's of camp gear and boose. 38deg day with aircon on..
I use it every day and its served me well. But i'd look at a 100Series next or a D40 Navara.

if you want something thats a good 4wd reliable and cheap then get a patrol. won't really get you there very quickly with a trailer on board but will get you there. parts are everywhere for them aswell so any breakdown will be quite cheap.
also one of the best 4wd's getting round. very capable

Hiluxs are to light and underpowered to tow, i know, i have one...
For that money, find a clean GQ Patrol or 60 Series Cruiser... Turbo Diesel Power...
Bucket loads of torque, and tonnes of room to carry stuff...
My old TD Patrol could bag up 3rd LOL

i use a vt commodore which works great. A BA falcon does it better though if you can find one in your price range.
Apparantly the old VG30 powered navara's love a good tow and are fairly cheap to buy.

That depends on the hilux. NA 3L then yea, 5L not as bad, anything turbo'd is much better.
Never had a problem with weight, towed a MZ110 with no issues

Hokey once again come's with the truth. go the old 4.2 diesel patrols. They are just in your range. bolt ons and knowledge are everywhere. and will handle an absolute flogging offroad.
If you like finesse go a range rover or if you can afford it a disco. but be prepared for random electrical gremlins. and you have to baby them off road for fear of snapping axles, (but much much much comfier and expensive off the shelf items will fix all your problems)

i probaly should add with the tow vehicle i put up, that its a moving Hotel and surround sound entertaiment room as well as a tow vehicle and what ever.
My Dad builds these trucks for ppl that want them for Race teams or hot rodders they are a lil more then $5,000 though.

We towed my 86 up to perth with a landcruiser. In the rain, with stupid amounts of wind. for 9hrs. It was good. landcruiser had 600 000kms on it, and i think the most work its had done is a replaced water pump. landcruisers for bulletproofness

Previously i've used my brothers 300,000km 2.7L Petrol 4x2 Hilux to travel some 800km return trips to the south and back. Great on fuel, no trouble moving along at 130km/h. Havent had my SS-V ute towing the car yet, although towing just my ski it does drink a little more than usual (expected) so it'll be interesting to see. But on the other hand, the 350kw its putting out should hardly require any throttle to get moving :P

I know its not a 4x4, but I use an 5.0L ED Fairmont wagon to tow mine. Been to adelaide, queensland and sydney heaps of time with no problems at all. Comfy too :)
I bought it for $3500 and a Daihatsu Rocky for $150, so i get the best of both worlds :p

my bro uses a hilux ute 2wd tow car from perth to collie. good power gets up to speed easily and is excellent on fuel. Also cost about 10G, just no 4wd but makes good tow car and you can throw stuff in the back and fits 5 peeps

I use my daily driver for towing, it's a BA Falcon 4.0 Auto ute. It tows very well, it's comfortable and has tons of room in the back for eskies, spare parts and tool boxes. I used to have an AU wagon, it was very good too.

Tow with the old lady's VX V8 tows pretty well IRS isnt the best for towing aplications brakes alright but paying for fuel while towing is savage.
I say never ever tow with a light vehicle or something with a motor that lacks torque, ive seen both of these factors tryed when towing and by god they failed like an indian telemarketer selling a product to an aussie.

When I need to tow shit I use my bro's 78 model V8 ZH Fairlane. Works a treat. Most little shit I just chuck in the back of the pano, quite amazing what I can get in there. I fitted all the crap from the plumbing shop in the pano when I was doing my bathroom reno, large vanity unit and all. All the tiles from the tile shop (damn the arse looked low). Gonna chuck a towbar on the Mrs' KF laser soon so I can tow the single axle trailer, with just a motor or something small which is too greazy to put in the back of the van.
