hey guys,

Done alot of searching for a upgrade radiator for a ae71 (4ac).
but, the information i found is all for 86's.
in people's experiance, what is a good upgrade radiator for a ae71?

I need a new one for my car asap (with not alot of luck finding one) and thought if i can find one to slightly modify, i can get it at the wreckers.

is the radiators and mounting setup the same as the 86's? or different?
i have a 4ac in it atm, but will go 4age soonish. so what options do i have?

cheers, Ben.

well im using a standard ae71 radiator with a bigport 4age. and its doing perfectly fine. so long as the radiator is in good condition then i dont see it being a problem at all.

alot of people grab a FWD radiator (excel/camry) purely because its got the built in thermo fans. and excel happen to have the outlets in an ok place.

nothing bolts in (excel comes close) so your gonna have to do a bit of engineering whatever you choose.

jsut go to the wreckers and stick your head under a few bonnets, you'll find something good!

but like i say, you prolly dont need to upgrade anyway. but thats just my experience.

im using an excel radiator in my ae71 was really easy to fit. BUT the top hose bit is a stupid size and the thermo fan pokes out quite a way.
One of the guys on here has a camry radiator in his ae71 which is spaced out closer to the motor to fit an intercooler and theres no way you could do it with the excel thermos.

ke70dave: thanks mate. Because my radiator is buggered and im having some trouble getting one, i thought i may aswell look into getting a better one.
thanks for your input :)

cerby86: do you happen to have a photo of what it looks like installed and how you did it? - thermo's etc.

BUT the top hose bit is a stupid size
what do you mean? outlet size is different to standard.?

Yeah the top bit is quite small so i just cranked the hose clamp up on it heaps and it hasn't leaked yet but it isn't as neat as i'd like.

Basically i got the two top brackets with the radiator. you just line them up and wack a couple of holes through the rad support to bolt them on.

Now the bottom of the radiator is the same. It has two pins with those round rubber things. BUT i didn't have brackets for the bottom.
So what i did was i had a length of 40mm or 50 mm ( i can't remember exactly) aluminium angle and cut two holes in it to match the rubber things on the bottom mount pins.
Then I tech screwed the angle to the bottom radiator support.
I didn't even need the top mounts it sat there perfect. but yeah the thermos came with the radiator and awesomely enough there is an air temp sensor and a thermo switch on the radiator from the factory.
So all we did was wire power to the radiator and it looks after itself. And if you wire it to constant 12V then it will keep running after you shut the motor off.
Just make sure you wire it up the right way or the thermo spins the wrong way :P

oh just make sure you get the one with the top outlet in the centre. the other one is useless

thanks heaps for that cerby! - car looks sweet too, well done!

on my ae, it has a rubber "cup" where the standard radiator sits into on the bottom, will the hundi radiator fit into that?
what year excel was it aswell?

cheers champ!

yeah i was hoping the same thing but the hyundai radiator is too thick :(
But if you cut it off that is where you bolt your aluminium angle.
basically just put it in as low as you can and it should be fine at the top.
Oh and if i were to do this again i would make the radiator a bit off centre towards the battery.
People told me that the bottom out let came very close to the swaybar but i though hey that'll be fine and the radiator will be dead centre. NAH. I mean it works but the hose is bent up slightly by the swaybar. I would rather have the radiator of centre by an inch or two.
